Job Description - Manual Inspector

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a quality control environment performing manual dimensional and visual inspection of machine components across receiving, first article, and final inspection.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and setting up inspections on a surface plate.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) for data entry and documentation.
  • Experience entering and maintaining inspection data in QMS software with 100% accuracy.
  • Sustained concentration and attention to detail for extended periods of repetitive, high-precision work.

Preferred:

  • Completion of GD&T training (ASME Y14.5) or related quality coursework, such as blueprint reading, metrology, SPC, or ISO 9001/IATF 16949 awareness.
  • Hands-on CMM experience with Calypso software.
  • Aptitude for learning CMM software and other quality data systems.
  • Experience in small-volume, high-quality precision automotive or aerospace component production.
  • Experience performing dimensional and visual inspection in a zero-defect or zero-escape environment.
  • Experience with surface finish measurement.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting at the inspection station for most of the workday (approximately 6 hours per day).
  • Walking occasionally or intermittently, up to 1 hour per day.
  • Standing occasionally or intermittently.
  • Lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs. occasionally or intermittently.
  • Pushing or pulling 25–50 lbs. occasionally or intermittently (for part transfer on a cart).
  • Near vision and color perception for close-up defect inspection.

Responsibilities

  • Perform receiving, first article, in-process, and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, pin and thread gauges, dial indicators, and optical comparators.
  • Evaluate parts under proper lighting and magnification for cosmetic and surface defects, such as scratches, dents, burrs, porosity, and plating or coating flaws, and disposition them against established visual standards and boundary samples.
  • Measure surface finish on machined surfaces using profilometers, surface roughness testers, and comparator standards (e.g., Ra, Rz), identify out-of-tolerance conditions, and report results for quality review.
  • Enter inspection data into the QMS software with 100% accuracy, verifying entries before submission so the data is reliable for statistical analysis and quality reporting.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and specifications, applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME/ANSI standards.
  • Write detailed nonconformance reports (NCRs) with precise measurements, part and lot identification, and labeled photos showing the location and extent of each defect.
  • Tag nonconforming parts, segregate them in quarantine or hold areas, and maintain traceability until final disposition.
  • Maintain inspection tools and gauges, confirm calibration before use, and remove damaged or out-of-calibration equipment from service.
  • Follow all safety rules and PPE requirements, and keep the inspection area clean and organized to 5S standards.
  • Communicate results and quality concerns to Quality, Engineering, and Production teams, and support root cause and corrective action efforts.
