Position Overview
The Lead Welder/Fabricator at Murphy Maritime plays a critical role in directing fabrication operations across marine
construction projects. This position combines expert welding skills with leadership, planning, and
quality assurance responsibilities. The Lead must be a hands-on professional who can guide
teams, interpret complex drawings, and uphold the highest standards of safety and workmanship
in dynamic marine environments. Wage is $26-$35 per hour DOE.
Key Responsibilities
There will be a designated Lead for both welding locations:
-Lead daily fabrication activities, ensuring alignment with project schedules and safety
protocols
-Supervise and mentor welders and fabricators, providing technical guidance and
performance feedback
-Interpret advanced fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and marine structural plans
-Oversee layout, fit-up, and welding of structural components including bulkheads, deck
framing, and outfitting assemblies
- Coordinate with rigging, pipefitting, and marine operations teams to sequence work
efficiently
-Conduct inspections and verify weld quality against AWS, ABS, or project-specific
standards
-Manage material usage, tool inventories, and fabrication logistics
-Enforce safety compliance, lead toolbox talks, and support incident prevention initiatives
-Collaborate with engineering and QA/QC personnel to resolve design or field issues
-Document work progress, crew hours, and fabrication milestones for reporting and billing
Required Skills & Qualifications
-Experience in marine or industrial welding/fabrication
-Proficiency in FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, and GTAW welding processes
-Strong blueprint reading and layout skills, including advanced weld symbols and
tolerances
-Familiarity with marine construction standards (ABS, DNV, USCG) and structural codes
-Ability to lead crews in confined spaces, elevated platforms, and offshore environments
-AWS certification preferred; additional supervisory or safety credentials a plus
-Excellent communication, problem-solving, and crew coordination skills
-Must possess personal tools and PPE suitable for marine fabrication tasks
Work Environment
-Active marine construction sites including barges, dry docks, and vessel decks
-Exposure to weather, noise, and heavy equipment
-May require travel, night shifts, or extended offshore assignments
-Physical demands include lifting, climbing, and working in tight or elevated spaces
