Job Description - Materials Engineer

Eaton\u2019s IS VEH Technology division is currently seeking a Materials Engineer. This is a full time, on-site position based at our Marshall, MI facility. \n\nThe Materials Engineer is a technical role combining engineering analysis, project support, and hands\u2011on laboratory execution. The position supports product development, manufacturing, and failure analysis activities by performing metallurgical testing, interpreting results, and providing engineering recommendations.\n\nThis role bridges the gap between engineering design and laboratory execution, requiring both practical lab expertise and the ability to apply engineering principles to solve materials\u2011related problems. The incumbent works independently and as part of cross\u2011functional teams to support new product development, manufacturing support, quality improvement, and innovation initiatives.\n\nThe expected annual salary range for this role is $86000 - $126000 a year. \nPlease note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. \n\nEaton announced, on January 26, 2026, the intent to separate its Mobility Group (including both the Vehicle and eMobility segments) into an independent, publicly traded company. We expect to complete the separation by the end of the first quarter of 2027. The compensation and benefits that will initially be offered for this position are based on Eaton\u0027s plans, programs and practices. If you are offered and accept this position and are actively employed by the Mobility Group when the spinoff closes, the new company will provide further details to employees concerning compensation and benefits at that time.\n\n## What you\u2019ll do:\n\nEngineering \u0026 Technical Analysis\n\n * Support moderately complex materials engineering projects related to new product development, design validation, manufacturing support, and failure analysis.\n * Interpret metallurgical test results and provide technical recommendations to engineers, manufacturing, and quality teams.\n * Perform root cause investigations using structured problem\u2011solving methodologies.\n * Apply foundational engineering principles and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) or Lean tools to improve product robustness, quality, and cost.\n * Prepare engineering reports, test summaries, and presentations to communicate results and recommendations.\n\n\n\nMetallurgical Laboratory \u0026 Hands\u2011On Execution\n\n * Conduct metallurgical characterization and testing, including: \n * Macro and micro photographic documentation, metallographic sample preparation, microstructure evaluation\n * Superficial, bulk, and microhardness testing, case depth determination, x\u2011ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis\n * Carbon/Sulfur elemental analysis\n * Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as cut\u2011off saws, mounting presses, polishers, microscopes, and hardness testers.\n * Support fractography and advanced analysis using stereoscope and SEM/EDX as proficiency develops.\n * Maintain laboratory calibration systems, consumable inventories, and equipment maintenance records.\n * Ensure safe laboratory practices, including chemical handling, disposal, and use of safety equipment.\n\n\n\nProject \u0026 Team Support\n\n * Review test requests and develop test plans in collaboration with engineers.\n * Coordinate laboratory work within project schedules to meet engineering and program deliverables.\n * Maintain organized test data, reports, and sample traceability for future reference.\n * Train and mentor metallurgical technicians or new hires in laboratory methods, equipment use, and safety practices.\n * Serve as a technical resource in specialty areas such as metallography, NDT, heat treatment, or lab equipment operation.\n\n\n\nContinuous Improvement \u0026 Development\n\n * Drive personal technical growth through assigned projects, training, and exposure to Eaton products and manufacturing processes.Support innovation, VAVE, and continuous improvement initiatives.\n * Develop proficiency or certification in one or more NDT techniques (MPI, Eddy Current, UT, X\u2011ray/CT), as applicable.\n * Maintain compliance with Quality, Environmental, Health, and Safety management systems\n\n\n\n## Qualifications:\n\nRequired Basic Qualifications: \n\n * Minimum Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Engineering Technology from an accredited institution\n * Minimum two (2) years experience in materials engineering and/or materials lab environment\n * Eaton will not consider applicants for employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position. Candidates must reside within a 50 mile radius of Marshall, MI. (Active Duty Military service members are exempt from this geographical limitation) \n\n\n\nPreferred Qualifications: \n\n * Prior experience in an automotive or transportation materials laboratory.\n * Exposure to SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), fractography, or advanced materials characterization.\n * NDT certification or willingness to pursue certification.\n * Familiarity with production manufacturing environments and quality systems.\n\n\n\n## Skills\n\n\u2022 Laboratory and office environment with exposure to production components and chemicals. \n\u2022 Use of PPE and adherence to lab safety procedures required. \n\u2022 Limited travel may be required for plant or supplier support.\n\nAll positions may require participation in video and in-person interviews as part of the hiring process.
