Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Facilities and Asset Management (OFAM), Asset and Administrative Management (AAM), Administrative Services Program Management Office (ASPMO), in Indianapolis, IN. Responsibilities Joining Customs & Border Protection (CBP) will allow you to support the mission by performing manual labor associated with the operations of the warehouse storage and distribution facility. This position starts at an hourly rate of $25.19 (WG-05, Step 1) to $29.40 (WG-05, Step 5). In this Materials Handler position, you will serve as the principal Materials Handler at the CBP National Distribution Center (NDC). You will work independently in a wide range of warehousing activities, including receiving, storing, selecting, and shipping general or specialized materials and equipment. Typical work assignments include: Coordinating all inbound shipments with the commercial carrier; Managing customer order process, screening inventory requests for accuracy and completeness; Loading shipments onto trucks using a variety of warehouse equipment, as needed, to include forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies; and Assisting management in planning storage space, establishing item locations, determining organization and arrangement of stock, and identifying high and low usage items according to agency regulations and procedures. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-05 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element Ability to do the work of a materials handler without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element(s), you should have experience performing the following duties: Inspect all incoming and outgoing shipments to ensure correct quantities, no damage, and to report any discrepancies. Loads and unloads shipments using a variety of warehouse equipment, as needed, to include forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies. Determine sequence for loading materials for maximum space utilization, safety considerations, and damage protection. Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of the overall warehousing plan, documentation requirements, and accepted warehousing methods, procedures, and techniques. Prepare various reports to assist management in monitoring and evaluating warehouse operations. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Knowledge of the methods used in processing materials in and out of the supply system including methods used in tallying types and quantities of items against receiving and shipping documents. Ability to read and follow instructions for ordering and receiving items. Ability to complete appropriate forms relating to stock description and materials and use computer terminals to organize stock as required by guidance. Knowledge and skills required for the safe handling, storage, and movement of materials handled. Ability to understand instructions associated with the performance of manual tasks, solve basic problems, and be able to read, write, and perform basic mathematics. Physical and Working Conditions: Required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries items that weigh up to forty pounds. May be required to handle items weighing over fifty pounds. Work is performed inside and outside storage areas that may be hot, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted. Exposed to possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and more serious injuries from falling or dropping items, back strains, etc. Forklift Operating Certification: Must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift operating certification.
