Job Description - Materials & Process Engineer III

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers, you will

be a subject matter expert for

Blue Origin's Engines Business Unit for thermal protection system (TPS) materials

including but not limited to polyisocyanurate foam insulation, ablative materials, C-C systems, C-SiC systems, and various coating systems

for critical spaceflight applications.
We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Responsibilities:
Evaluate and select nonmetallic materials and coatings for thermal protection and other applications, taking into consideration thermal properties, mechanical properties, and environmental factors.
Collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to integrate TPS requirements into the overall vehicle or system design.
Act as M&P signatory for engineering drawings for rocket engines.
Perform development and qualification testing for TPS materials and systems to ensure performance under engine induced and external environmental requirements.
Generate documentation for TPS material and process specifications to ensure adequate process control while optimizing for producibility.
Provide technical support and disposition of nonconforming hardware from the application of TPS materials and other other processes.
Stay informed on emerging technologies and industry trends related to thermal protection systems and materials.
Interface with supplier vendor base technical issues concerning raw materials, part fabrication, and new materials/processes.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance TPS design and implementation processes and procedures.
Mentor M&P engineers and guide tactical and strategic program-related decisions.
Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to implement requirements
Review production drawing for large complex assemblies systematically, documenting the review to the established requirements.
Qualifications:
5+ years directly related experience
Minimum B.S. in Material Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
Demonstrated experience (M&P signatory authority) on a flight production program.
Hands-on experience working with thermal protection system materials, coatings, chemicals related to corrosion prevention and adhesion, preferably on spacecraft, engines, or similar applications.
Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification efforts of materials or material systems.
Knowledge of

environmentally-assisted

degradation and standard methods for testing mechanical properties (including fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture) of soft materials
Experience working with

application of primers, topcoats, and other finishes.
Use of polymers in aerospace systems and application of adhesives to components
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired:
Masters or PhD in Material Science/Engineering or related field
Familiarity with high-temperature, high pressure Oxygen Engines applications
Familiarity with analysis, testing, and mitigation for Hydrogen Embrittlement
Hands-on skills with SEM, EDS, metallography, mechanical testing.
Demonstrated experience developing new aerospace processes and refining existing ones
Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing
Experience with Failure and Forensic Analysis experience for rotating machinery (e.g. turbomachinery) and static hardware
Experience with statistical analysis for preparation of design allowables
Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis (e.g. MMPDS)
Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and managing budgets.
