Job Description - MDS Coordinator

Description

 

Responsible for overseeing the timely and accurate completion of MDSs, CAAs, assessments and the electronic transmission to the State of Illinois.  These activities are carried out in accordance with departmental and Cantata’s policies and procedures, current federal, state and company standards, guidelines and regulations governing our company.   

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: This description is intended only to identify the basic responsibilities and requirements of this job classification and does not prevent the assignment of other job-related duties.  Successful job applicants will be able to perform these essential functions with or without requested reasonable accommodation.

  1. Performs all duties in accordance with the Cantata Promise, treating every person (Client, fellow employee-partner, general community member) with respect, integrity and compassion.
  2. Responsible overseeing the timely and accurate completion of assessments, MDSs,, CAAs etc. in accordance with Cantata, federal and state guidelines and regulations governing our company.
  3. Responsible for assuring that the MDSs reflect the actual status of Clients.
  4. Responsible for the timely transmission of MDSs.
  5. Responsible for reviewing medical record documentation that supports the skilled need/medical necessity for Medicare services and provides direction to appropriate staff when necessary to obtain needed documentation.
  6. Attends Medicare meetings and provides input as to the appropriateness of coverage and RUGs categories.
  7. Responsible for training nursing staff regarding assessments, MDSs, CAAs, Care Plans and appropriate computer programs.
  8. Actively involved with quality indicator process and on the Quality Indicator committee.
  9. Monitors changes in current federal and state regulations, as well as professional standards as it relates to the MDS process.
  10. Participates in and attends various professional committees and conferences as required and as approved.
  11. Attends in-services, meetings and educational training in accordance with Cantata’s policies and procedures.
  12. Responsible for interacting with the Accounting Department or produce bills to 3rd party payors that accurately reflect the level of care rendered to the Client and that support the company’s claim for payment.
  13. Consistently demonstrates an ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner.
  14. Creates and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
  15. Attends in-services, meetings and educational training in accordance with Cantata’s policies and procedures.
  16. Performs tasks/duties and utilize forms in accordance with Cantata’s policies and procedures.

Requirements

 

Knowledge/Skill/Experience

  • Current nursing licensure in the state of Illinois.
  • Prior experience in Long Term Care or geriatrics and the MDS process, preferred.
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and to oversee other personnel with regard to the MDS process.
  • Ability and willingness to effectively motivate and lead individuals and groups with diverse needs and abilities.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
  • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Ability and willingness to work harmoniously within a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form with a diverse group of people.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents/patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Aptitude for detail work.
  • Computer literate.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the company.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Must meet general health requirements as set forth by this facility.
  • May be asked to work beyond normal working hours which may include weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Is subject to callback during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post disaster, etc.).
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks and climbs stairs, as needed to conduct nursing activities.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of twenty-five pounds.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of clients during emergency situations.

Exposure Classification

  • Job duties are classified as Category I (routine exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues).
  • Routine exposure to chemicals, which are identified for use in the nursing department.
