Position Title:    Mechanic 

Department:    Field Operations

Reports to:  Fleet Supervisor

Supervision Received: Direct Supervision

Supervision Exercised:  None

FLSA Status: Non Exempt

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Learn and follow Bluebonnet Electric, OSHA, and ANSI safety rules and regulations.
  • Services all Cooperative vehicles -- changes oil filters, oil, air filters, checks fluid levels, repairs brakes, repairs hydraulic equipment, etc.
  • Learn to troubleshoot and diagnose problems with all Cooperative vehicles from passenger vehicles to large trucks.
  • Learn hydraulic principals.
  • Learn to weld and uses of cutting torch.
  • Clean and maintain shop.
  • Required to be on-call, available to work weekends, holidays and non-standard hours as needed.
  • Maintain professional working relationships with all employees, members, and vendors at all times.
  • Maintain regular attendance; arrives to work on time and is ready to work.
  • Use safe work practices at all times and in all situations.
  • Must be able to appropriately handle confidential information and act within the practices established by the Bluebonnet Red Flag policy.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Class “A” drivers license, must obtain an appropriate commercial drivers license (CDL) within (6) months of employment with Bluebonnet Electric Coop.
  • Must be able to be certified as a State Vehicle Inspector in accordance with TDPS procedures and regulations if needed in your shop. 
  • Prior experience as a mechanic’s helper and basic auto repair is preferred.

Licensing and Certification:

  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must be certified in CPR, First Aid, AED and Blood-borne pathogens.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Attends vendor training and obtains certification as necessary.

• Read and understand service manuals to stay current on technology of repairs of vehicles.

• Confers with mechanics when problems arise.

• Knowledge of both mechanical principles and hydraulic principles.

• Basic knowledge of cooperative policies and guidelines.

• Basic computer skills in the following applications: MS Word, Excel, Outlook, SAP time entry, and work order processing.

• Interpersonal skills that result in effective working relationships with peers, members and vendors.

• Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner; focused on improvement or problem resolution in a constructive, positive, and professional manner.

Tools and Equipment Used:

• Office Equipment including computer, printer, copier, fax, etc.

• May be required to drive a cooperative vehicle.

• Heavy equipment.

• According to established business need, must maintain a mobile phone and appropriate communication plan.

Physical Demands:

• Requires repetitive motion of hands and fingers.

• Heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds.

• Required to be on-call.

Work Environment:

• Extended time spent outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
