Job Description - Mechanic

Description

The Mechanic will be responsible for supporting the maintenance, repair, and overall mechanical integrity of the plant and brine gathering equipment and systems. This hands-on role involves working on a wide range of rotating and fixed equipment critical to geothermal energy production, including pumps, valves, piping systems, compressors, and turbines. The Mechanic will be expected to execute preventive maintenance tasks, respond to equipment failures, support outages, and contribute to the safe and efficient operation of the plant. This position will report to the Maintenance Supervisor.

This position follows a Monday–Friday (5/2) schedule but requires availability for emergency call-outs after hours, on weekends, or holidays in support of around-the-clock power generation.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance & Repair: Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical equipment including centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, gearboxes, fans, compressors, valves, and piping systems. Perform alignment, balancing, seal replacement, and vibration analysis on rotating equipment. Assist in the disassembly and reassembly of turbines and generators during outages or overhauls.
  • Preventive & Predictive Maintenance: Execute preventive maintenance tasks per schedule and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Document findings, perform equipment condition assessments, and support predictive maintenance programs (vibration, thermography, oil analysis). Identify potential failures or degradation and initiate corrective actions.
  • Outage Support: Participate in planned outages, shutdowns, and turnarounds, including teardown, inspection, and reassembly of major plant components. Work closely with vendors, engineers, and support teams during major repairs and equipment upgrades.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all plant safety procedures and environmental compliance requirements. Follow lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), confined space entry, and hot work permitting practices. Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas.
  • Documentation & Communication: Use CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to log work orders, time, materials, and maintenance findings. Communicate effectively with the operations team and supervisors regarding equipment status and job progress. Assist in root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts for mechanical reliability.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or mechanical trades training preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in industrial, geothermal, power generation, or process plant environments performing mechanical maintenance. Experience with piping systems, rotating machinery, and general plant utilities required.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient with mechanical tools, measurement instruments (dial indicators, calipers, micrometers), and alignment tools. Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals. Familiarity with rigging practices, pump curves, and mechanical seal types.
  • Schedule & Physical Requirements: Must be able to work a Monday–Friday (5/2) schedule at Cape Station. Must be available for emergency call-outs after hours, on weekends, and holidays. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, working at heights, and performing physically demanding tasks in outdoor or hot process areas.
  • Preferred Certifications: OSHA 30, forklift certification, rigging/signalperson certification, First Aid/CPR, or equivalent industrial safety training.

Location

This position is based at Cape Station, Fervo Energy’s premier geothermal power generation facility located in southwestern Utah. Cape Station is a remote, industrial site that operates 24/7 to deliver firm, zero-carbon energy to the grid. The Mechanic will work a standard Monday–Friday (5/2) schedule, reporting to the site daily. However, due to the continuous nature of plant operations, the role also requires availability for emergency call-outs after hours, on weekends, and holidays, as needed to support plant reliability and response.
