Job Description - Mechanic

Job Summary


The Mechanic oversees the maintenance, safe operation, and lifecycle management of the Lisle Park District fleet and maintenance equipment. This includes prioritizing repair assignments and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal functioning of gasoline and diesel vehicles, trailers, mowers, and small-engine tools. Additional responsibilities include establishing procedures maintaining accurate records, and managing vehicle-related budgets.



Primary Duties


Major responsibilities include the following.  Other responsibilities may be assigned.  




  1. Diagnoses and troubleshoots vehicles and equipment, tests electrical circuits and hydraulic pressures, inspects performance, and disassembles and repairs units by replacing defective components and parts.

  2. Performs engine repairs, including engine
    replacement, valve grinding and lapping, engine tuning, and maintenance of brake, hydraulic, cooling, and lubrication systems.

  3. Performs routine vehicle and equipment maintenance including lubrication checks, winterization, and preventive servicing of fluids, tires, and filters on vehicles, mowers, and tractors.

  4. Perform weld, braze and torch cut operations on vehicles and equipment as required; fabricates steel components as needed.

  5. Manages parts inventory and ordering, maintains accurate vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair records, coordinates inspections, and documents service history.

  6. Conducts safety inspections on repaired vehicles and equipment prior to release, coordinates DOT safety lane inspections and towing as needed, and oversees vendor and contracted services.

  7. Operates park district vehicles for testing, transporting parts and other related tasks.

  8. Establishes fleet maintenance, repair, and safety policies and procedures, and assists in developing and conducting staff training on the safe operation of vehicles and equipment.

  9. Oversees the purchase and liquidation of district fleet assets while assessing vehicle and equipment needs, estimating repair or replacement costs, and supporting annual budget recommendations.



Qualifications



    High school diploma or equivalent is required; formal training from an accredited technical school, trade school, auto technology, or similar training program is preferred. 


     


    Minimum of 3 years of automotive repair experience and 2 years small-engine repair experience (or equivalent combination). Must possess knowledge of both gas and diesel engines. Must be skilled in the safe use of tools, materials, and equipment.



    Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License with excellent driving record. 


    ASE certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire. Must maintain the certification as a condition of employment.



    Physical requirements include: good speaking, hearing and vision abilities, and strong manual dexterity. Requires extended periods of standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, twisting, and operating equipment. The ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.  Anything lifted over 50 pounds must be achieved with assistance (mechanical or team-lift).



    Will work in a garage environment with exposure to gasoline, engine fluids, chemicals, dust, noise, heights, confined spaces, cleaning agents and related fumes.  



    Typical work week is Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm. May require on-call hours for emergency repair needs as required.


     
    Pay is based off previous experience. The target hiring range is $29-32/hr and the wage scale for this position is $24.36/hr-36/hr.
