Mechanic/Equipment Specialist (Limited Duration)
Full-time, Benefitted, Temporary, AFSCME Represented, Nonexempt
This will be a limited duration appointment as our existing mechanic will return after deployment. Anticipated duration is approximately one year.
This posting will remain open until filled.
General Statement Of Duties: Performs a wide variety of maintenance and repair functions on vehicles and equipment owned and operated by the District; operates heavy or special equipment for parks projects; does related work as required.
Distinguishing Features Of The Class: An employee in this classification is responsible for the full scope of equipment mechanics on a scheduled as well as emergency basis. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance & Operations Program Manager, who reviews the work for adherence to schedules and results attained. Although supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification, an incumbent may be assigned lead-worker responsibility for special projects or assignments.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment; occupational hazards and related safety precautions; vehicle body repair; operating diagnostic equipment. Considerable knowledge in the operation of vehicles and equipment maintained and repaired; record keeping practices; maintaining appropriate inventory for repair activities.
Skills: Use and care of hand/power tools used in the mechanic trade; heliarc and wire welding equipment.
Abilities: Locate, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions; fabricate with various metals and wood; perform major repairs on engines and transmissions; understand and follow written and oral instructions; work independently; establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, departments, outside vendors and suppliers; maintain accurate records; exercise initiative and judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities.
Physical Demands Of The Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and reach above the shoulders, often in conjunction with reaching for or manipulating objects. The position requires general physical mobility including the ability to lift materials (such as containers, small equipment, etc.) weighing up to 50 pounds often, and seldom up to 100 pounds with assistance. The duties of this position involve pushing and pulling materials up to and sometimes exceeding 100 pounds with the use of a handcart. While performing the duties of this position the employee is occasionally required to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds above the shoulders. Manual dexterity and coordination, including but not limited to grasping and squeezing, are required for the entirety of the work period. The duties of the position involve standing for the vast majority of the work period and the use of stairs/ladders about once per week. The duties of this position are most always performed inside in the shop, and consequently exposure to temperature extremes during the work period is rare. Exposure to loud noise is moderate, and occasionally requires the use of ear protection while using power tools and other loud equipment. Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodation will be evaluated on an individual basis and depends, in part, on the specific requirements for the job, the limitations related to the disability and the ability of the hiring department to accommodate the limitation.
Experience And Training: High school education or equivalency supplemented with training in automotive mechanics and three years of experience as a mechanic at a journeyman level; fork lift training; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties. Minimum age is 18 years old.
Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of or ability to obtain valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License (Class A or Class B) with air brake restriction removed; safe driving record. Because this job is considered safety sensitive, a drug screen test will be required prior to employment.
Personal Protective Equipment: Respirator, face shield, chemical resistant/liquid proof gloves (nitrile), safety glasses, welding gloves, welding mask, welding apron.

Hours/Shifts
Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
