The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performs preventive maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of NCSHP and other State law enforcement vehicles.
Provides reliable support services to uniformed members, including vehicles used for special assignments.
Promotes confidence and trust with vehicle operators through quality maintenance and repair services.
Maintains a safe and clear work area to support efficient operations.
Position/Physical Requirements
Typical work schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
This position may also require the occasional special assignment and/or weekend shift.
An NC Inspector’s License, as outlined under Sections 608 and 609 of the Clean Air Act, must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.

Job duties include:
Performing regular preventive maintenance every 6,000 miles and diagnosing and repairing motor vehicle problems on NCSHP and other state law enforcement vehicles.
Completing warranty repairs on new motor vehicles within the coverage mileage and date, repairing and correcting motor vehicle recalls issued by the manufacturer and verifying repairs by test driving the motor vehicle.
Installing NCSHP equipment on new motor vehicles for issuance to enforcement members and removing equipment from motor vehicles taken out of service.
Installing aftermarket emergency equipment and decals on NCSHP vehicles.
Reading and interpreting Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and using diagnostic tools to diagnose and determine the best course of action for complex system repairs.
Performing general automotive checks and repair in the following areas: alignment, brakes, climate control systems, drive train, engines, transmission repair and rebuild.
Troubleshooting complex vehicle repairs using the proper tools, resources, equipment and training.
Utilizing a rollback wrecker to transport NCSHP and other agencies' vehicles.
Utilizing specific software programs developed by Ford, GM or Chrysler to troubleshoot routine and complex vehicle repairs.
Identifying problems, determining possible solutions and actively working to resolve issues.
Performing duties while exerting moderate to heavy physical energy, with expectations of standing for the majority of the day.
Delivering a high level of comfort and trust to law enforcement personnel during daily operations and special assignments.
Maintaining a safe and clear work area conducive to efficient operations and following all OSHA and State regulations pertaining to motor vehicle repair.
Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
Progressive experience performing maintenance and repair on motor vehicles requiring in-depth diagnostic analysis and troubleshooting.
Experience diagnosing electrical and electronic system issues using current manufacturer-approved diagnostic equipment, including systems related to anti-lock braking (ABS), traction control, suspension, steering, lighting, and alignment.
Experience repairing and servicing major vehicle systems, including braking systems, engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and climate control systems.
Experience maintaining and repairing Ford, Chrysler, and/or General Motors (GM) vehicles, including the use of advanced vehicle diagnostic software and electronic control systems.
Experience installing aftermarket equipment on vehicles, including law-enforcement-related equipment, decals, and pin striping.
Minimum Education and Experience
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. High school diploma
OR
General Educational Development (GED) diploma
AND
two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the automotive technician field. This includes diagnosing and repairing engines, brakes, transmissions, suspension systems, and drive trains; performing preventive maintenance services; and servicing electrical or electronic systems and on-board diagnostics.
OR
equivalent combination of education and experience.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application.
Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
