Job Description - Mechanical Commissioning Engineer

This role supports the commissioning and startup of mechanical systems within complex construction and industrial environments. The position works closely with commissioning engineers, contractors, and controls teams to ensure systems are installed, tested, and operating in accordance with project requirements. The individual will play a key role in supporting system readiness, performance validation, and successful project handover.


Responsibilities:



  • Support commissioning activities across all project phases, from design review through startup, testing, and final handover.

  • Review mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and sequences of operation to understand system design and identify potential issues early.

  • Perform installation verification and QA/QC walkdowns to ensure systems are constructed in accordance with design and specifications.

  • Execute pre-functional checklists to ensure systems are safe, complete, and ready for startup and energization.

  • Assist with system startup activities including flushing, balancing support, rotation checks, and verification of safeties and controls.

  • Support functional performance testing to validate system operation against design intent and client requirements.

  • Identify, document, and track commissioning issues through to resolution.

  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and controls/electrical teams to support system readiness and troubleshooting.

  • Maintain accurate commissioning documentation including checklists, test records, and issue logs.

  • Utilize commissioning tools and platforms to track system status and progress.

  • Participate in commissioning meetings and provide updates on system readiness and testing progress.

  • Support system turnover activities including documentation completion and client handover.

  • Follow all site safety procedures and contribute to a strong safety culture on site.

  • Any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned to you in your role.


Skills Required:



  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems including HVAC, piping, and process systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and sequences of operation.

  • Familiarity with commissioning processes including pre-functional and functional testing.

  • Knowledge of system startup activities such as flushing, balancing, and rotation checks.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in field environments.

  • Experience working with commissioning or construction management software tools.

  • Excellent communication and coordination skills across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Strong attention to detail with accurate documentation and reporting capabilities.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Commitment to safety and adherence to site procedures and standards.


Education / Licenses / Certifications:



  • Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field preferred.

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.

  • Mechanical or commissioning-related certifications preferred.
    Proof of education, licenses, and certifications will be required where applicable.
