Job Description - Mechanical Commissioning Specialist


The Mechanical Commissioning (Cx) Specialist supports the commissioning of HVAC and plumbing systems to ensure building systems are installed, tested, and operating in accordance with design intent, owner requirements, and applicable codes and standards. This role involves site visits, documentation, coordination across trades, and active participation in commissioning activities. The Cx Specialist is reliable, eager to learn, and progressing toward greater independence while maintaining quality, organization, and professionalism. 

Commissioning Support & Project Execution

  • Support multiple commissioning projects from award through acceptance and occupancy.
  • Read, understand, and follow project-specific commissioning specifications and requirements.
  • Participate in commissioning planning, execution, and closeout activities.
  • Prioritize assigned tasks and manage individual deadlines to support overall project schedules.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of commissioning processes and tools. 

Design & Document Review 

  • Read and understand full sets of construction drawings, including architectural, civil, structural, electrical, and mechanical disciplines. 
  • Perform initial reviews of shop drawings for completeness and conformance to design intent.
  • Begin applying applicable codes, standards, and commissioning requirements to assigned tasks. 
  • Review own work for quality and accuracy using established checklists. 

Field Activities & Site Engagement

  • Conduct site visits to observe system installation and progress.
  • Participate in field inspections, including accessing equipment using scaffolding as required.
  • Support equipment startups, functional testing, and test and balance activities.
  • Observe work quality and communicate issues or concerns to the Lead Commissioning Specialist or Engineer. 

Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Maintain clean, accurate, and organized commissioning records in accordance with EP standards.
  • Document site observations, testing activities, and follow-up items. 
  • Use proper filing standards and document control practices.
  • Assist with preparation of commissioning reports and deliverables. 

Communication & Coordination

  • Communicate effectively across trades, both internally and externally.
  • Use proper communication channels for project-related correspondence. 
  • Perform day-to-day project communications, including setting up meetings, sending updates, and drafting meeting minutes as directed.
  • Contribute to project updates and coordination meetings in a professional manner.
  • Develop site social skills and build productive working relationships with project stakeholders.

  • Maintain consistent work hours, professional appearance, and appropriate conduct for office and site environments.
  • Keep an accurate calendar and manage assigned commitments and deadlines.
  • Stay focused on tasks, actively participate in meetings, and engage with team members.
  • Ask for help when needed and seek feedback to support learning and growth.
  • Balance work responsibilities with personal well-being.

Requirements

  • Authorization to work in the US.  No visa sponsorship available.   
  • Willingness to travel 30-60% is required.  Projects will be local within Minnesota, but also throughout the United States.
  • 2 year technical degree in Building Sciences and/or nationally recognized Commissioning Certification or Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Physical Demands of the Position: 

  •  Lifting/Moving: 50lbs occasionally, 20lbs frequently. 
  • Climbing/Balancing: Frequent work on step ladders, extension ladders, scaffolding, and uneven surfaces. 
  • Walking: Extensive walking frequently required throughout a regular or extended workday. 
  • Stooping/Bending/Crawling: Frequent requirement and often necessary in confined spaces. 
  • Standing: Long periods of time standing will be required. 
  • Reaching: Frequent reaching overhead, horizontally, and below feet.
  • Driving Vehicles/Air Travel: Frequently required.

$65,000 - $80,000
