Job Description
NorthAmCon is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will design and develop custom material handling equipment and systems while performing the engineering analysis and calculations necessary to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation.
This position is responsible for turning customer requirements into engineered solutions through detailed design work, mechanical calculations, component selection, and project execution. You will collaborate closely with Manufacturing, Purchasing, Operations, and customers to develop innovative products that support NorthAmCon's continued growth.
The ideal candidate will bring a combination of engineering knowledge, practical problem-solving ability, and experience designing mechanical equipment in a manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop custom material handling equipment and mechanical systems.
- Create and review manufacturing drawings, 3D models, and engineering documentation.
- Perform engineering calculations related to structural loading, component sizing, power transmission, and system performance.
- Design products and systems based on customer requirements and application needs.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Review designs for manufacturability, safety, cost, and performance.
- Support manufacturing, purchasing, and operations teams with technical expertise.
- Lead engineering projects from concept through production.
- Participate in product testing, inspection, validation, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Evaluate and improve existing product offerings and production methods.
- Communicate project status, technical risks, and mitigation plans to stakeholders.
- Mentor and support Mechanical Design Technicians and CAD Designers.
- Occasional travel to manufacturing facilities and customer sites may be required.
Skills Needed
- Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and technical evaluations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
Knowledge Required
- Mechanical engineering principles including statics, mechanics of materials, machine design, and power transmission.
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
- Manufacturing, fabrication, machining, welding, and assembly processes.
- Engineering documentation and product development practices.
- Material handling, conveyor, or industrial equipment design experience preferred.
Ability to Implement
- Develop engineered solutions that meet customer, safety, and performance requirements.
- Perform calculations to validate design performance and reliability.
- Translate customer requirements into manufacturable designs.
- Balance technical, cost, and schedule considerations when making engineering decisions.
- Lead projects through design, production, testing, and implementation.
- Identify risks and proactively develop solutions.
Education
Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Alternative Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, or related discipline combined with significant relevant engineering design experience.
Experience
Preferred
- 3+ years of mechanical engineering, machine design, or equipment design experience.
- Experience designing industrial equipment, machinery, material handling systems, conveyors, or related products preferred.
- Experience performing engineering calculations and developing custom equipment solutions.
- SolidWorks and AutoCAD experience required.
