Job Description - Mechanical Equipment Specialist Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Job Title: Mechanical Equipment Specialist
Location: USGS Western Fisheries Research Center (WFRC), Seattle, WA
Duration: June 1, 2025 – May 31, 2026 (with potential for two 1-year extensions)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM PT
Travel: Occasional day trips to USGS Marrowstone Marine Field Station and remote assistance for Columbia River Research Laboratory


Overview:

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Western Fisheries Research Center (WFRC) is seeking a qualified Mechanical Equipment Specialist to provide maintenance and operational support for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), industrial process equipment, and building control systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of facility systems supporting vital scientific research.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain:

    • HVAC and ventilation systems

    • Water/hydronic systems

    • Industrial process equipment

    • Building automation and control systems (e.g., Siemens Desigo)

  • Perform preventive maintenance per schedule and document all work completed

  • Install new and replacement HVAC and process equipment

  • Support updates and basic programming of building automation systems

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance records and documentation

  • Interface with facility staff and contractors for coordinated maintenance efforts

  • Ensure all work complies with applicable codes and safety standards


Technical Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding of HVAC principles and system controls

  • Proficient in Siemens Desigo building automation systems

  • Knowledge of industrial equipment including pumps, fans, water treatment systems, and hydronics

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, manuals, and schematics

  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards including:

    • ASHRAE standards (including Guideline 36)

    • NFPA 70: National Electrical Code

    • OSHA 29 CFR 1910 & 1926


Required Qualifications:

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 3 years of experience in industrial or commercial facility maintenance

    • Demonstrated experience with HVAC systems and Siemens Desigo systems

    • Basic electrical troubleshooting and repair experience

  • Certifications:

    • EPA Universal Certification for HVAC

    • Valid driver’s license

    • HVAC technical certification from an accredited institution


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with:

    • Powers Process Control Language

    • Research laboratories or similar environments

    • Aquaculture or fisheries systems

  • Certifications in:

    • Building automation programming

    • BACnet Operator

    • Electrical work per local jurisdiction

  • Experience with control system integration


Contractor Responsibilities:

  • Provide personal hand tools typically used in HVAC and mechanical maintenance

  • Maintain and account for tools on government property

  • Submit material requests and track material usage

  • Maintain clean and safe work areas in compliance with facility safety protocols

  • Document all maintenance activities, including monthly reports and system updates


Government-Furnished Equipment (GFE):

The government will provide all necessary parts, specialized tools, access equipment, expendable materials (filters, lubricants, etc.), safety equipment (beyond personal PPE), and control system hardware/software for maintenance tasks.


Work Environment & Conditions:

  • Work is performed on-site at USGS WFRC in Seattle, WA

  • May require occasional travel to nearby field stations

  • Must comply with all safety, security, and laboratory protocols, including confined space entry
