Job Description - Medical Assistant

SAAF Mission

The San Antonio AIDS Foundation seeks to reduce HIV transmission, provide support and treatment for those living with HIV, reduce stigma and support positive sexual health. SAAF provides sexual health education, STI and HIV testing and counseling, medical care, case management, housing and meal support, mental health services and referrals for dental health. Access to care and early intervention have a significant impact on the health and well-being of people living with HIV.   

Position                                                                                                                                                             

 The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting in all aspects of medical practice under the direct supervision and responsibility of a physician. The MA assists the medical providers as they assess, examine and treat patients. The MA assures electronic medical records (EMR) are updated. This position is responsible for patient flow management, patient safety, performing phlebotomy, providing injections, assisting in minor procedures, processing lab specimens and the safe operation of medical equipment. The MA will maintain and order supplies for The Care Clinic. 

Other responsibilities include coordinating requests for information and prescriptions, maintaining and preparing patient care areas to ensure efficient, effective and safe patient care delivery; Assisting patient in scheduling or referral appointments.

This position demands a high level of cultural competency of the unique needs of the LGBTQIA++ community, communities of color, and other marginalized populations.

Duties and responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for the collection, communication and documentation of accurate patient information/data and maintaining medical records according to regulatory standards and organizational policies and procedures. 
  • Performs and documents vital signs, clinical care quality measures, and medical history information.
  • The Medical Assistant is responsible for handling and administering all medications according to regulatory standards and organizational policy and procedure.
  • Directly assists medical providers in the performance of medical procedures as required and directed.
  • Remains proficient and knowledgeable regarding the use and documentation requirements within information technology systems within established scope of practice.
  • Performs phlebotomy
  • Assists medical receptionist as required
  • Adheres to HIPAA privacy and security requirements.
  • Maintains required continuing education credits to remain current certification.
  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF).
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Medical Assistant certification is required and BLS Phlebotomy Certified
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent is required. 
  • At least one year of experience as a medical assistant in an outpatient setting is preferred.
  • Must have experience dealing with the public and ability to work with patients with special needs
  • Ability to work under pressure with a positive attitude and ability to organize information for quick retrieval is required. Computer skills, medical terminology, and experience with office assessments necessary.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)

CONTINUING EDUCATION: The employee is required to maintain and expand his/her knowledge of HIV/AIDS, treatments and current requirements and eligibility for service entitlement programs

Working conditions

This job operates in a nursing environment. This role routinely uses standard medical and office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The position may also require working with challenging clients and defusing client affairs as needed.  

Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
