Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant (MA) at LOS Surgery Center will provide direct support to physicians, surgeons, registered nurses, and other healthcare professionals in an outpatient surgery setting. The role includes assisting with patient care, preparing patients for surgical procedures, maintaining medical records, and supporting various clinical tasks. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, detail-oriented, and capable of multitasking in a fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Patient Care Support:

• Assist patients in preparing for their surgical procedures, including preoperative instructions, answering questions, and providing reassurance. 
• Take and record vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and weight). 
• Conduct EKGs 
• Perform venipuncture and collect specimens for pre-operative laboratory testing. 
• Ensure accurate patient identification and proper labeling of specimens 
• Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked pre-op testing area 
• Assist with other clinical or administrative tasks as assigned by nursing leadership. 
• Assist with patient mobility and comfort before and after procedures. 

2. Clinical Duties:

• Assist physicians or surgeons during minor surgical procedures and examinations as needed. 
• Perform basic laboratory tests, specimen collection, and other diagnostic tasks. 
• Prepare patients for diagnostic imaging procedures as directed. 

3. Administrative Duties:

• Maintain and update accurate patient records in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. 
• Prepare and manage patient charts for upcoming procedures. 
• Ensure proper consent forms and medical release documentation are signed and in order. 

4. Equipment Management:

5. Communication:

• Provide patients with pre-procedure instructions and postoperative care instructions.
• Ensure clear communication between patients, physicians, nursing staff, and other team members.

6. Safety and Compliance:

• Follow all ASC policies and procedures to ensure the safety of patients and staff. 
• Adhere to infection control and safety standards.
• Ensure all necessary documents and records are compliant with healthcare regulations.

• High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
• BLS required.
• Phlebotomy certification and experience required.
• EKG certification/experience required.
• Certification in Medical Assisting (CMA) or eligibility for certification preferred.
• Previous experience in a surgery center is preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology Attention to detail and accuracy in entering patient information and verifying insurance.
• Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure or in difficult situations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn new office systems quickly.
• Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines and confidentiality standards.
• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
• Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
• Manual dexterity for handling medical instruments and paperwork. 

Working Conditions:

• Full-time position: Monday – Friday
