Key responsibilities of a medical assistant may include:

• Clinical duties:
  
  
  
  
  • Taking patient medical histories  
    
  
  
  • Preparing patients for exams by explaining procedures and gathering necessary equipment 
    
  
  
  • Assisting with minor procedures like wound care, suture removal, and injections as directed by a physician 
    
  
  
  • Drawing blood for lab tests (phlebotomy) 
     
    
  
  
  • Monitoring patients during procedures 
    
  
  
  
  


• Administrative duties:
  
  
  
  
  • Scheduling patient appointments and managing patient flow 
    
  
  
  • Maintaining accurate medical records, both electronic and paper 
    
  
  
  • Answering phone calls and managing patient inquiries 
    
  
  
  • Preparing and updating patient charts 
    
  
  
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the exam rooms and medical supplies 
    
  
  
  
  

Required skills and qualifications:

• Completion of a certified medical assistant program
  


• Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or other relevant credential
  


• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records
  


• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients effectively
  


• Basic understanding of medical terminology and anatomy
  


• Proficiency with computer systems and electronic health records (EHR)
