Position Summary

The Medical Biller is responsible for preparing, submitting and following up on medical claims with insurance companies to ensure accurate and timely reimbursements for healthcare services. This role works closely with providers, front office staff, and insurance carriers to resolve billing issues and maintain compliance with healthcare regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and submit accurate electronic and paper claims to insurance companies.


• Verify patients' insurance eligibility and benefits 


• Review patient charts for accurate coding (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS)


• Post insurance and patient payments into billing software (e.g., eClinicalWorks, Epic, Athena). 


• Identify and correct claim errors before submission


• Follow up on unpaid, denied, or rejected claims


• Submit appeals and supporting documentation when necessary


• Communicate with insurance companies regarding claim status


• Generate patient statements and collect patient balances


• Process refunds and adjustments


• Maintain compliance with HIPPA and payer guidelines


• Run aging reports and track accounts receivable (A/R)

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree preferred


• 1–3 years of medical billing experience preferred


• Knowledge of billing systems, EHR/EMR platforms, or accounting software


• Familiarity with EHR/ EMR and billing software systems 


• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills


• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion


• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Skills

• Medical billing and coding knowledge (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS) – if healthcare-based


• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)


• Time management and multitasking in a fast-paced environment


• Customer service and conflict resolution skills
