Description
Performs patient specimen analysis for diagnostic purposes, under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist. Enter all results into the computer system. Brings panic value test results to the attention of the Medical Technologist and/or Pathologist. Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing various equipment and work areas in the laboratory. Maintains laboratory inventory.
Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory.
Requirements
Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology.
Responsible for performing high-complexity testing.
Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
Performs quality control procedures and instrument checks.
Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab values for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
Meets current documentation standards and policies.
Interacts professionally with the Director of Clinical Laboratory, Pathologist and clinical laboratory staff.
Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Performs routine and stat laboratory assays.
Performs qualitative urine analysis, color, clarity, specific gravity.
Performs type and cross matches in the blood bank with results reviewed by the Medical Technologist.
Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab results for the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient. Makes Medical Technologist and/or Pathologist aware of abnormal results, panic values.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
Always follows standard precautions.
Operates and maintains equipment correctly and safely, including calibration of instruments.
Maintains quality results by running standards and controls; verifies equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced troubleshooting; monitors quality control measures and protocols.
Identifies the presence or quantity of drugs of abuse, therapeutic drugs and toxic substances by operating toxicology instrumentation and performing manual methods for the performance of drug screens, blood alcohol levels and carbon monoxide levels.
Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating chemistry equipment, performing hand chemistries.
Regulatory Requirements:
· High school graduate or equivalent.
· Associate degree in science preferred.
· Certification/Licensure as a Medical Lab Technician in Hematology, Chemistry and/or Blood Bank.
· State Licensure as a Medical Technologist in the following specialties: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology.
· Certification preferred.
