Job Description

General Summary

MLS Lead role performs complex analyses on a variety of sample types, utilizing independent judgment to generate acceptable test results. Performs as lead by managing workflow, mentoring others and serving as a clinical and technical resource.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  1. Independently performs responsibilities of MLS I, MLS II and MLS III.
  2. Leads quality improvement initiatives as a member of a multi-disciplinary patient care services team. Develops and leads efforts to improve regulatory compliance within and beyond the department.
  3. Assists leadership team with interviewing, orienting, training and supervising. Provides input to leadership team for performance evaluations and corrective actions.
  4. Collaborates with leadership in identifying gaps and opportunities for professional development and strategic organizational initiatives. Facilitates in creating a positive departmental culture.
  5. Assists leadership in identification and resolution of complex clinical and operational issues.
  6. Responsible for regulatory and accreditation agency preparation and participation.
  7. Performs duties as assigned related to the job description.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  1. Five years of clinical laboratory experience + Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, biology or related sciences or 5 years of clinical laboratory experience + an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, basic sciences or related field required or completion of Military Laboratory Technician program with relevant experience required.
  2. ASCP or equivalent preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Proficient knowledge of laboratory processes, testing and analytical procedures and techniques, and various specialized laboratory equipment.
  2. Working knowledge of word processing and laboratory information systems; experience in laboratory information systems is highly desirable.
  3. Proficient organizational and problem-solving skills are required to develop and implement efficient work processes, and to successfully resolve production conflicts. Must be able to develop timelines and milestones for project development.
  4. Evidence of leadership ability
  5. Highly effective interpersonal, verbal, and written computer skills are required. Individual must be able to effectively apply these skills to various healthcare environments.
  6. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.

Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

  1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  2. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  3. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
