Job Description - Medical Office Coding Supervisor

Description

Summary 

Under the direction of the Coding Manager, the Coding Supervisor is responsible for providing first-line supervision for Medical Office Coding staff. 

Responsibilities 

  • Provide daily supervision of coding staff and provide feedback to the Coding Manager on performance. 
  • Participate in interviewing and onboarding new staff. 
  • Provide ongoing feedback to staff on areas for improvement. 
  • Assist in ensuring that all members of the coding team follow official policies and procedures.  
  • Assist in preparing staffing schedules to provide adequate coverage for all work queues. ? Assist in audits of coders. 
  • Assist manager on coders annual performance. 
  • Serve as liaison between coding department and other departments within IBJI regarding coding inquiries. 
  • Serve as a coding subject matter expert for coding staff, management, and other RCM staff. 
  • Participate in improving workflow processes and coding quality improvement. ? Perform other related duties as assigned. 
  • Adhere to and support the objectives, policies and procedures of Illinois Bone and Joint Institute. 
  • Support the development and implementation of improvement initiatives as it relates to the department goals. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information according to HIPAA guidelines. Job Requirements 

Requirements

Education 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.  
  • Associate’s degree in health information or equivalent is preferred. 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS-P) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) is required. 
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is preferred.

Experience/Skills

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in coding office encounters & procedures in Orthopedic Surgery plus one of the following specialties is required: Podiatry, Pain Medicine, Rheumatology, Hand Surgery, Sports Medicine, or Physiatry. 
  • Previous supervisory experience in multi-specialty setting preferred. ? Understanding of Medicare, Medicaid and commercial coding and reimbursement policies required. 
  • Understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines and coding conventions required. 
  • Understanding of Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, and Pathophysiology required. 
  • EMR experience required; Epic is preferred. 
  • Encoder experience required; Codify is preferred. 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills required. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.

Base salary offers for this position may vary based on factors such as location, skills and relevant experience.
