As a Medical Records Clerk, here is a big picture view of what you'll do:



  • Ensures all forms/documents are present, properly identified and signed.

  • Prepares reports, summaries, records and related forms and documents; and maintains files and records.

  • Organizes and evaluates medical records for completeness and accuracy.

  • Ensures all forms/documents are completed and properly identified and signed, and ensures all necessary information has been entered into the computer.

  • Communicates with physicians and other health care professionals, to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.

  • Performs clerical tasks as directed.


A few must-haves for a Medical Records Clerk:



  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 2 years clerical or secretarial experience  

  • 1 year medical records experience preferred
