History of Moto Medic: From Humble Beginnings to an Automotive Powerhouse
Moto Medic's story begins with Dave Nelder, whose initial passion for photography led him to discover a natural talent for mechanics. Before 1987, Dave worked on vehicles as a side job to support his hobbies. Realizing his knack for mechanics, he pursued formal education in diesel repair at university.
Equipped with his education, Dave went on to work for several companies, most notably Benson's Lumber Yard. There, he maintained large vehicles and machinery, and his expertise was so valued that he was sometimes flown across the country on Benson's private plane to inspect vehicles for purchase.
In 1987, Dave decided to strike out on his own, founding Moto Medic as a mobile repair business operating out of a little red box truck. His primary focus was on large trucks and fleet repairs. As demand for his services grew, he hired his first employee. Together, they tackled mobile repair calls, building a reputation for quality and reliability.
By 1991, the workload had grown so much that Dave knew they needed a permanent location. They found the perfect spot on M-24 in Lake Orion, Michigan, renting a building. Moto Medic thrived in this new location, eventually acquiring and purchasing the land and buildings, and expanding further to accommodate their growing needs.
Today, Moto Medic has evolved from its humble beginnings in a red box truck to a state-of-the-art facility with 20 service bays and 15 hoists. The business now occupies multiple buildings and employs over 15 staff members. The original employees from the early days are still part of the team, contributing their vast experience and expertise. The shop is now run by Dave's son, Alex, who has been with the business since 2008. It focuses on everyday family domestic vehicles and is renowned for its diagnostic capabilities and for solving problems other local shops can't handle.
Moto Medic's growth is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and passion of its founder and team. From a one-man mobile operation to a bustling automotive repair hub, Moto Medic remains committed to providing top-notch service to its community. The little brick building at the front of the property, affectionately known as "Mission Control," serves as the customer service center, where service advisors greet customers and manage work orders. Behind this modest facade lies a sprawling facility equipped to handle a wide range of automotive needs, ensuring that every vehicle receives the care it deserves.
