The goals of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics program in MN are to 1) increase access to community-based mental health and substance use disorder services (particularly to under-served communities), 2) advance integration of behavioral health with physical health care, and 3) improve utilization of evidence-based practices on a more consistent basis.
Job Summary:
The Mental Health Practitioner is responsible for delivering direct client services within a residential Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment program. Key duties include facilitating skill development, providing crisis intervention, leading therapeutic groups, and conducting one-on-one support sessions. The role also includes completing essential administrative tasks to support therapeutic outcomes, ensure program compliance, and maintain operational effectiveness.
This position is part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team in a 24-hour, short-term residential setting. Flexibility is required to work varied shifts, including days, evenings, occasional weekends, and holidays.
Essential Functions:
Client Care & Therapeutic Support
- Conduct assessments and orientations during client admissions; complete documentation within required timelines using the electronic health record.
- Provide individual and group skills training focused on emotional regulation, independent living, and community functioning.
- Assist clients in completing treatment-related homework and therapeutic assignments.
- Support the discharge process by identifying barriers, coordinating care, and arranging referrals for follow-up services.
- Advocate for clients and assist them in obtaining and maintaining public benefits.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to help identify treatment goals and contribute to discharge planning.
- Monitor clients throughout the unit and provide redirection, de-escalation, or other interventions to maintain a safe and supportive environment.
- Facilitate or co-facilitate group activities and program sessions as assigned.
Admissions, Discharge & Administrative Tasks
- Complete DAANES data collection and timely data entry for client admissions and discharges.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation in accordance with program and regulatory requirements.
- Attend staff meetings and participate in ongoing training and supervision.
Safety & Security
- Perform room searches and confiscate contraband or unapproved items as per policy.
- Enforce facility rules and behavioral expectations for all clients and guests.
Professional Conduct & Compliance
- Maintain positive, professional relationships with clients, coworkers, and community partners.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to all applicable policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Proactively seek clarification or support from supervisors when needed.
- Follow all agency standards and participate in continuous quality improvement efforts.

Required Skills/Abilities:
Clinical & Therapeutic Support Skills
- Experience providing direct care and therapeutic support to individuals with behavioral health and/or substance use challenges.
- Ability to assist in assessing behavioral health concerns, including gathering and documenting relevant data.
- Experience facilitating or co-leading educational groups and therapeutic activities.
- Familiarity with discharge planning and ability to support transitions through effective hand-off communication and coordination.
- Ability to assist in developing behavioral interventions and provide recommendations for implementation.

Education & Experience:
- Qualify as a Mental Health Practitioner as defined below by the Minnesota Dept of Human Services:
(a) 4-year human service degree plus 2000 hours supervised mental health experience, or
(b) Master’s degree in human services, or
(c) or 4,000 hours supervised mental health experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalency preferred
- A philosophical approach consistent with Range Mental Health Center’s mission
- Pass a Department of Human Services background check
- Meet minimum training requirements of training under the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Minnesota Department of Health
- One year free from substance use problems
- CPR / First Aid certification required; certification can be provided by RMHC
- Current Minnesota driver’s license
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to climb stairs
- Ability to operate a keyboard and mouse
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Sufficient vision to utilize a computer monitor, to inspect and monitor the physical outlay or each program, to monitor client’s behavior and / or body language, and to inspect luggage, clothing, or packages
- Sufficient hearing acuity to accurately record or respond to another party both in person, on the phone, and in a group setting
- Maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness and physical appearance
- Ability to verbally communicate English in a manner that is sufficiently clear to be easily understood
- Regular and reliable attendance
- Must be able to maintain a Minnesota driver's license and auto insurance
