Job Description - Mental Performance Coach

Title: Mental Performance Coach
Department: Mental Performance
Reports to: Director of Mental Performance
Status: Full-Time Salaried, Exempt
Location: Clearwater, FL

Position Overview:

The Philadelphia Phillies are seeking a full-time Mental Performance Coach (MPC) to join their team. The position provides direct mental performance coaching with a primary focus on players at AA and/or High-A levels. The Mental Performance Coach would work closely with an integrated staff (medical, S&C, dietitian, coaches, video, analysts, life skills, mental health, etc.) to provide performance support to Phillies players and staff. The Phillies Mental Performance Department values team-oriented individuals who are excited about being part of a high-achieving mental performance program and open to learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement individualized mental performance plans for players. Provide individual mental performance coaching to players at assigned affiliates (AA and/or High-A).

  • Develop and deliver team-wide mental performance training for players and coaches.

  • Work in tandem with coaches and staff to support players’ mental performance development.

  • Provide support for coaches and staff on their own mental performance.

  • Contribute to departmental mental performance programming, including off-season programs and Spring Training in Clearwater, FL.

  • Maintain timely, accurate, and detailed documentation of all services provided.

  • Assist the Mental Performance Department in developing, implementing, and evaluating organization-wide mental performance services.

  • Build and sustain trusting, meaningful relationships with players, coaches, staff, and fellow MPCs.

  • Demonstrate cultural humility and adapt training approaches to athletes and coaches from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Mental Performance.

Expectations:

  • Follow and uphold AASP ethical standards and maintain CMPC.

  • Possess the ability to self-reflect and display personal & situational awareness.

  • Be able to work independently, while also collaborating, consulting with, and supporting the Mental Performance team.

  • Be open and excited to learn and actively seek growth and development opportunities.

  • Be open to giving and receiving feedback. Our team requests and receives candid feedback, so desired candidates must be open to giving and receiving feedback on work as a common practice.

  • Possess strong initiative and personal standard, as most MPC work will be conducted on an individual basis (working with staff & coaches, working with players, documentation, and creation of workshops)

Logistics:

  • The Mental Performance Coach will be based out of Clearwater, Florida and will start sometime between November 1, 2025, and January 10th, 2026. Relocation assistance will be available to candidates not currently based in the Clearwater/Tampa region.

  • The position requires both in-season and off-season support to players and staff.

  • The position requires consistent travel during the season. Candidates must be able to be “on the road” 21-26 days a month or relocate to the affiliate during the season.

  • The applicant must be willing to work extended days and hours, including holidays and weekends.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters or Doctorate in Applied Mental Performance or related area.

  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology, or ability to obtain CMPC within a year of hire.

  • Evidence of past significant mental performance coaching experience working with athletes/performers in an applied setting (3+ years preferred).

  • Conversational Spanish preferred, with willingness to work towards fluency in Spanish (if not already fluent).

  • Baseball/softball experience and knowledge preferred.
