Metal Production Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY: Supervise and coordinate the activities of inmate workers to manufacture metal products within the plant at Union CI, Raiford, Florida while providing on-the-job training in plant operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

1. Ensures production equipment functions while directing setup and adjustment of machines.
2. Monitors route cards for production work orders.
3. Supervises assigned inmate workers per FDC policies.
4. Provide on-site, on-the-job training to workers within the plant in the production of lockers, open and closed shelving, beds, cabinets, tables, footlockers, detention furniture, BBQ grills, park benches, picnic tables, and waste containers.
5. Control and document use of all caustics in facility.
6. Leads all aspects of safety in the factory: safety committee, safety training and ensures work.
7. Analyzes and resolves equipment problems that affect production.
8. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
9. Any other duties needed to maintain operation of plant: HVAC, paint, roofing, points of entry locks, and pest control.
10. Coordinate inspections from FDC organizations, as well as local and state agencies.
11. Manage keys, tools, and toolboxes for facility ensuring full accountability on a daily basis.

Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education and Experience: High school/GED, + 2 years supervisory experience. Mechanical aptitude and ability, some manufacturing experience helpful.
2. Language Skills: Basic verbal, written, and electronic communication skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, and procedures manual. Ability to wire routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of inmate workers. Ability to communicate by telephone and email.
3. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. Ability to compute rates, percent, and interpret graphs.
4. Reasoning Ability: Training inmates in production and clerical techniques and coordinating manpower and equipment usage.
5. Specialized Knowledge and/or Skill: Operates industrial machinery, forklifts, and other material handling equipment. Basic hand tool operation, knowledge of preventative maintenance concepts and procedures. General factory production protocol, ability to plan and coordinate multiple activities.
6. Other Skills and Abilities: FDC trained to supervise inmate workers; cross trained in other production areas of the plant.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, use feet to operator pedals of vehicle; and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud – the dust level is moderate.
