Job Description - Metrology Specialist


Summary of Position:

The Metrology Specialist is responsible for conducting detailed dimensional inspections and analysis of molded and purchased components to ensure compliance with engineering and quality standards. This role also supports tooling and process teams by providing accurate metrology feedback related to mold performance, tooling evaluations, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will have strong measurement skills, a background in precision manufacturing, and a collaborative mindset to work closely with tooling engineers, mold technicians, and quality teams. 


Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned):

· Perform dimensional inspections on molded parts, purchased components, and tooling samples using advanced metrology equipment (e.g., CMM, vision systems, CT scanners).

· Support tooling evaluations by inspecting tool components (e.g., cores, cavities, inserts) and identifying wear, dimensional shifts, or tolerance issues.

· Provide timely and detailed inspection feedback to tooling, process engineering, and design teams to support tooling maintenance and improvements.

· Prepare and document First Article Inspection (FAI) reports using established templates and reporting tools.

· Coordinate sample flow to and from the metrology lab, including part identification, labeling, separation, and fixture setup.

· Maintain traceability of samples and catalog FAI and tooling samples as required.

· Monitor and maintain calibration and the condition of metrology lab instruments and fixtures.

· Support internal and external quality audits by providing measurement records and metrology process documentation.

· Assist in the development and refinement of new measurement techniques and fixturing to improve speed, accuracy, and repeatability.

· Provide occasional on-floor technical support for production measurement processes or line-side inspections.

· Ensure compliance with internal quality procedures and laboratory best practices.

Education and Skill Requirements:

· Associate degree or technical certification preferred; relevant experience will be considered

· 5+ years of experience in a metrology, inspection, or quality technician role, preferably in injection molding or tooling environments

· Experience inspecting precision plastic components and/or small-scale tooling features

· Proficient in use of manual measurement tools: calipers, micrometers, height gages, pin gages

· Experienced in the use of CT scanners, MicroVu, or other vision-based metrology systems

· Demonstrated ability to interpret technical drawings, 2D prints, and GD&T schemes

· Working knowledge of Excel and Microsoft Office; experience with data reporting and basic analysis

· Familiarity with SolidWorks, Pro-E, or AutoCAD is a plus

· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

· Able to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments

· Experience supporting tooling or mold maintenance teams is a significant plus

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
