This position is within the Communicable Disease Division (CDD) of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH). The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is the state's public and environmental health laboratory. The WSLH Communicable Disease Division (CDD) performs laboratory testing that supports the Wisconsin Division of Health Services through surveillance and outbreak response for any pathogen of public health significance. The CDD is a national and regional reference laboratory for many Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs, including but not limited to the detection of and surveillance for: influenza, vaccine-preventable diseases, enteric disease pathogens, parasitic diseases and antimicrobial resistance. This position will play an integral part in both statewide and national public health programs.
This position has the responsibility for the supervision of eleven public health microbiologists in the CDD Virology and Sequencing section who perform high complexity testing. This position functions very independently under general supervision by CDD Division Directors and a CDD Manager. This position works closely with CDD leadership (Directors, Manager, other Supervisors and lead technical staff) to ensure the effectiveness of operations and organization of all work activities of the CDD.

This position is on-site at 2601 Agriculture Drive, Madison, WI 53718. Work hours are 7:45 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Occasional after hours, weekend or holiday work may be required in support of urgent or emergent public health needs of the organization. This position may need to respond, on a rotational basis, to the 24/7 WSLH alert system for assessment and resolution of emergency response laboratory testing needs.
Contributes to the development of microbiology science through professional association conference attendance, presentations, and participation - 5%
Identifies, develops, and facilitates unit staff training opportunities - 5%
Directs, develops, and evaluates research methodology, study preparation, and results interpretation - 5%
Inspects, maintains, calibrates, and repairs equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation - 10%

Minimum salary $75,000.00 per year. Final salary negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

WSLH clinical services are certified through the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), and accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Candidate must meet 42 CFR § 493.1461 Standard; General Supervisor qualifications.
Must be able to visually distinguish colors. A color vision screening test is required prior to an offer of employment.
At minimum, a Bachelor of Science degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, is required.
An official (or copy of an official) transcript showing conferred degree will be required as a condition of employment.
For degrees earned outside of the United States, proof of qualification equivalency is required and must be performed by a nationally recognized organization such as the National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES) (http://www.naces.org) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (http://www.aice-eval.org). Course by course review is required for candidates demonstrating ability to meet CLIA qualifications.
