Microbiology Lab Assistant

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting diagnostic testing through accurate specimen processing and hands-on laboratory support. Qualifications

• Minimum age of 18 years


• High school diploma or equivalent


• Previous specimen processing or laboratory experience preferred, but not required


• Dependable, detail-oriented, and committed to accuracy


• Ability to multitask and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment


• Strong team player who thrives in a collaborative setting


• Willingness to learn new technology and laboratory processes


• Familiarity with patient confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines


• Reliable attendance and punctuality

Responsibilities

• Assist Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLSs) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) with laboratory activities, including specimen processing, sample plating, and other preparatory procedures


• Operate automated instruments, electronic systems, and precision tools, and perform basic troubleshooting as needed


• Participate in proficiency testing and quality assurance activities


• Maintain accurate documentation, answer phones professionally, and protect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements


• Follow established laboratory safety and infection control procedures


• Perform additional duties as operational needs evolve, with opportunities to gain laboratory experience and develop new skills

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods


• Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination necessary to handle laboratory instruments, pipettes, small objects, and specimens with precision


• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds


• Ability to read and interpret information, accurately identify specimens, and communicate clearly in person and by phone


• Ability to bend, stoop, and reach to access equipment and supplies

OSHA Category: This position involves occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, and/or tissues. Employees performing these duties are offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis-B vaccination series.
