Job Title: Middle & High School Art Teacher

Job Classification:  Certified/Licensed Instructional

Reports to:  Middle & High School Building Administrator

Work Schedule:  Academic Year / 7:45 am - 4:00 pm

General Description: 

The Art Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and developmentally appropriate visual arts instruction to middle and high school students. This role fosters creativity, artistic skill development, and an appreciation for the arts through a variety of mediums and techniques. The teacher will plan lessons aligned to Indiana academic standards, encourage student expression, and create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports both individual growth and artistic exploration.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art or Education
  • Must have or be willing to obtain an Indiana Professional Educators License

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Plan lessons using curriculum, instructional calendars and Indiana State Standards  
  • Plan lessons focusing on the rigor of the grade level curriculum while meeting students at their instructional level  
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive art curriculum for grades 6–12 aligned with the Indiana Department of Education’s Visual Arts Standards.
  • Teach a variety of visual art forms, including drawing, painting, sculpture, digital media, and art history.
  • Foster a classroom environment that promotes artistic exploration, creative thinking, and student engagement.
  • Evaluate and assess student progress through projects, critiques, and exhibitions in accordance with school and state guidelines.
  • Integrate cross-disciplinary connections and support school-wide literacy and critical thinking goals.
  • Provide opportunities for students to showcase their work through exhibits, competitions, and community events.
  • Maintain art supplies, equipment, and budget, ensuring safe and organized use of materials.
  • Collaborate with fellow educators, administrators, and support staff to meet the needs of all students.
  • Participate in professional development, school meetings, and parent-teacher conferences as required.
  • Plan lessons that are easily identifiable, focused and clear; reinforce lessons with additional instruction, learning activities, and appropriate assessment  
  • Adjust and plan lessons based on differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students  
  • Make modifications in lessons based on knowledge of the goals for each student’s disability as outline in his/her IEP and or 504 plan  
  • Utilize classroom and corporation materials, resources and technology that enhance instruction  
  • Communicate with parents in a clear, effective and timely manner  
  • Keep student, parent and family information confidential  
  • Maintain accurate records regarding student information, grades, report cards, test data, IEP’s and attendance as required by the principal  
  • Adhere to School Board policies, Corporation policies and procedures, and building guidelines  
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal and district administrators 

School Activities:

High School Art Teacher is required to attend and/or participate in such other activities as directed by the Administrator such as: faculty meetings (before or after school hours), open houses, commencement exercises, chaperone student activities, provide guidance for students, participate on faculty committees, study and help resolve school problems. 

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Competency in the administration and interpretation of academic ability testing  
  • Ability to use technology for documentation and preparation of professional materials  
  • Ability to teach and assist students in the use of computer applications  
  • Ability to communicate assessment results, in written and oral forms, to parents and professionals  
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate behavior plans for use in general and special education settings  
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, allocate time, and maintain schedule flexibility
  • Must demonstrate foundational professionalism, including consistent attendance, punctuality, adherence to school policies and procedures, and strong employability skills. These are considered essential, non-negotiable expectations of the role.

Requirements

 Qualifications:
