Description

The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise, motivating each student to cultivate physical fitness with appropriate social and emotional adjustment, discovering and developing talents of students through physical achievement and developing strength, skill, agility, poise and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities according to each student’s ability. The candidate must have strong instructional and classroom management skills, including but not limited to: use of various teaching strategies and resources to actively engage students in learning, adjusting curriculum as appropriate, and posting lesson plans on RenWeb. OCS teachers are expected to make meaningful connections between faith and learning in the classroom.

The Physical Education Teacher is a position requiring a calling to use God-given talents to further the Kingdom of God. The Physical Education Instructor is expected to be a minister to the OCS community through actions, speech, attitude, and prayer, as they point students to Christ.

Essential Function: 

1. Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual or team sports, utilizing curriculum designated by Orangewood Christian School and other appropriate learning activities

2. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Orangewood Christian School

3. Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education program

4. Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement

5. Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students

6. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas

7. Provide appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students

8. Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other record keeping activities as necessary

9. Maintain control of storage and use of school property

10. Evaluate each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports

11. Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress

12. Supervise students in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day

13. Administer testing in accordance with division testing practices

14. Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities

Supplemental Function:

1. Participate as a club sponsor, athletic coach, class sponsor and chaperon for events and trips

2. Participate is assigned school duties weekly

3. Attend weekly staff meetings

Required Personal Qualities:

The employee shall: 

1. Have confessed Jesus Christ as his/her personal Lord and Savior. 

2. Believe the Bible is the revelation of God’s truth and is infallible and authoritative in all matters of faith and practice. 

3. Faithfully attend and actively support a local church that adheres to the principles listed in the OCS Statement of Faith.

4. Be in agreement with the school’s Statement of Faith. 

5. Be a Christian role model in attitude, speech and actions both in and out of school to students, parents and fellow employees. Agree with and adhere to the OCS Lifestyle Statement. 

6. Show by example the importance of Scripture study and memorization, prayer, witnessing and unity in the body of Christ.

7. Have the spiritual maturity, academic ability and personal leadership qualities to equip students to transform the world for Christ and His kingdom.

Additional Personal Qualities: 

The employee shall:

1. Recognize the role of parents as primarily responsible before God for their children’s education and be prepared to assist them in that task.

2. Demonstrate the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance and punctuality.

3. Meet everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity and optimism.

4. Maintain a personal appearance that is a Christian role model of cleanliness, modesty, good taste and agreement with school policy.

5. Have a strong command of the English language in both verbal and written communication.

6. Respectfully submit and be loyal to constituted authority. 

7. Notify the Head of School of any policy that he/she is unable to support. 

8. Refuse to use or circulate confidential information.

9. Place his/her OCS position ahead of other jobs or volunteer activities. 

10. Make an effort to appreciate and understand the uniqueness of the OCS community.

Education Requirement: Bachelor’s Degree

Licenses or Certifications: Holds or is in the process of earning a Florida Educator Certificate
