POSITION SUMMARY


Under the direction of the Museum Manager, the Museum Clerk supports daily operations at the Man House Museum and the Mansfield Historical Museum. This part-time position greets and assists visitors, leads tours, and supports exhibits, educational programs, and historical research. Saturday work is a regular part of the schedule.


The Museum Clerk is often the first person visitors meet, and the role helps preserve and share the history of the Mansfield community. Friendly customer service and careful handling of historical items are central to the job.


WHAT YOU'LL DO



  • Visitor Services - Serve as the point of contact for museum visitors in person and by phone; answer questions, help with patron information needs, and look after visitor safety while on site.

  • Tours - Lead guided tours of the Man House Museum.

  • Educational Programs and Events - Assist with educational programs and activities, and help plan, organize, and carry out special events.

  • Historical Research - Assist with historical and genealogical research; help patrons locate information in books, periodicals, and electronic resources.

  • Exhibits - Assist with changing exhibits and organizing exhibit materials.

  • Collections and Records - Compile and organize historical documents that are donated or on loan, such as family files, newsletters, and photographs.

  • Care of Historical Furnishings - Provide care and housekeeping for historical furnishings and museum spaces.

  • Related Duties - Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.


WHAT YOU'LL BRING



  • Historical Education - Knowledge of historical education programs.

  • Communication - Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

  • Customer Service - Ability to greet visitors, answer questions, and handle requests courteously in person and by phone.

  • Working Relationships - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with visitors, volunteers, and City staff.

  • Schedule Availability - Ability to work Saturdays as a regular part of the schedule.


Education and Experience



  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Ability to classify antiques, documents, and other historical items.

  • Willingness to take part in continuing education in museum studies and historic preservation.

  • One (1) year of experience in museum studies or museum work is preferred.

  • Knowledge of historical research and educational display design techniques is preferred.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations that apply to museum operations is preferred.


 


WORKING CONDITIONS


Work Environment


Work is performed in two public museums, including a historic house museum, with frequent contact with visitors of all ages. The part-time schedule includes regular Saturday hours, and occasional evening or weekend hours may be needed for special events.


Physical Demands


This position is classified as light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Work involves standing and moving about for sustained periods while leading tours, assisting visitors, and setting up exhibits.


Mobility and Equipment Operation


The employee must be able to move about both museum buildings, including stairs and multiple floors, and use a step ladder to reach exhibit and storage areas. The employee must be able to move and arrange exhibit materials and delicate historical items with care, operate a computer, telephone, and standard office equipment, and communicate effectively with visitors in person and by phone.


Environmental Conditions


Work is performed primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure during special events.


Hazards


No significant hazards. Collection care and housekeeping may involve exposure to dust and routine cleaning products.
