Museum Educator

Department:  Museum of Making Music

Classification:  Part-time, Non-exempt

Position Reports to:  Museum Education Manager

Location:  Variable and dynamic; hours shift week-to-week based on tour demand, with some busy periods and lighter weeks. Flexibility is essential. 

Salary Range:  $25 hour

JOB OVERVIEW

Under the direction of the Museum Education Manager, the Museum Educator provides engaging, educational, and inspiring experiences for students and other pre-scheduled groups visiting the Museum of Making Music. This role brings music, the music industry, history, and culture to life through interactive tours and hands-on activities tailored to a wide range of ages and abilities. Because tour schedules fluctuate with the school calendar and community demand, the position requires adaptability and a flexible approach to scheduling. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Lead gallery tours for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, college, and special needs groups. 
• Facilitate interactive music experiences (e.g., drum circles, instrument demonstrations) for field trips and program participants. 
• Maintain current knowledge of permanent galleries, special exhibitions, and spotlight displays. 
• Apply best practices and uphold the highest standards in museum education. 
• Participate in staff meetings to review programs and share feedback for improvement. 
• Assist in developing new educational materials, activities, and training resources for volunteer educators. 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to work a flexible, shifting schedule, including weeks of heavy activity and weeks of lighter activity. 
• Strong communication skills with audiences of all ages and abilities. 
• Commitment to excellent visitor service and inclusivity. 
• Professional and calm demeanor in dynamic or high-stress situations. 
• Knowledge of music, musical instruments, and history. 
• Collaborative work style with a positive attitude.  
• Experience working with students or groups in an educational, museum, or performance setting. 
• Creative, solution-oriented thinker with the ability to build consensus. 
• Familiarity with the music products industry a plus.
