MYEEP is a youth workforce program of JCYC (Japanese Community Youth Council). The JCYC Workforce Programs consist of the largest youth employment programs in San Francisco, and includes MYEEP, San Francisco YouthWorks (SFYW), Project Pull, JCYC STEM Academy together providing subsidized employment experiences as well as other learning activities to over 2,000 San Francisco youth annually.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) is a citywide collaboration of ten non-profit organizations in San Francisco and provides paid work experience to over 1,000 San Francisco high school youth annually. MYEEP leverages the desire of young people to be employed to engage them in job readiness training, youth development, and educational activities. The Academic Mentor Program, now in its sixth year, provides participants with academic enrichment. Each MYEEP location has a dedicated Academic Mentor who facilitates skill-based workshops, monitors academic success, and provides tutoring.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The MYEEP Academic Mentor will work out of one partner agency in the San Francisco community to provide high quality academic support for program participants. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of working effectively with youth of color in low-income communities. This is a part-time, average 19 hours a week, in-person position. The Academic Mentor reports directly to the Academic Mentor Program Coordinator and works closely with their MYEEP coordinator.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support youth aged 14-16 in improving their overall academic performance through engaging workshops and personalized tutoring sessions


• Create, lead and facilitate weekly academic-focused workshops, designed to enhance participants' knowledge and skills


• Monitor and facilitate tutoring groups of up to 30-35 participants across various subjects


• Foster a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where participants feel valued and motivated to succeed


• Provide individual or small-group tutorial support during the Spring period (Jan-May)


• Have individual check-ins with youth who need extra academic support and guidance


• Establish effective communication channels with participants, Coordinators, school administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents/guardians to gather essential reports, progress updates, and report cards


• Monitor and maintain accurate attendance records from tutorial sessions and other vital documentation


• Utilize Salesforce database to track and input participant grades throughout the school year


• Act as a liaison between worksites, MYEEP Coordinators, and Worksite supervisors, ensuring smooth communication and coordination


• Support various MYEEP-related trainings and events, including DCYF, MYEEP Worksite supervisor trainings, WorkHub in SF, Cal Day, etc.

• Ensure the confidentiality and security of sensitive participant data, primarily using Salesforce and ADP platforms


• Assist in the onboarding process of program youth through administrative work and diligent follow-ups


• Attend Weekly/Bi-Weekly Meetings with Coordinators and Academic Mentor Program Coordinator

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Available 4-5 days/week, Monday – Friday during after school hours (approx. 2:30pm - 6:30 p.m.)


• High school diploma/GED or higher


• Ability to travel/commute to one of the following 10 San Francisco locations: (Visitacion Valley, Chinatown, Bayview, Mission, Tenderloin, Fillmore, Richmond, Sunset, Bernal Heights, OMIE


• Experience working with high school youth with various backgrounds, orientations and beliefs


• Ability to build relationships with students - their interests, hobbies, strengths, etc


• Strong understanding of high school level Math (Algebra, Geometry); English, science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics); history, and language electives (Spanish, Chinese)

• Open communication and responsiveness


• Experience with classroom management and behavioral management skills


• Demonstrates empathy and compassion in interactions with youth


• Ability and willingness to facilitate workshops


• Ability to create a positive and motivational learning environment that will allow youth to achieve goals and begin planning for the future


• Competency with Microsoft Office, Zoom, Dropbox, Slack and Google G Suite (Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Forms, Google Classroom, Google Slides)


• Flexibility with synchronous lesson planning and workshops

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• A current college student or recent graduate


• Interest in working with youth


• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with youth


• Bi/multilingual


• Previous Tutoring/Mentoring experience


• Experience in Curriculum development


• Experience in Child and Youth development


• Experience working with English Learned and/or students with disabilities Possess strong problem-solving abilities to aid youth effectively, including the capacity to research unfamiliar topics


• Familiarity with Salesforce and ADP
