About Nantucket Police Department

The Nantucket Police Department is a full-service agency that is responsible for five major public safety functions; Police, Emergency Communications, Marine Safety, Emergency Management and Business Licensing. The department has 41 full-time sworn officers, 21 full-time non-sworn staff, two non-sworn part-time staff and 92 seasonal staff. The department has opportunities to join our specialty units (Detectives, ACO, SRO, SWAT, Motorcycle unit, Marine Unit, Neighborhood Officer, and Airport Officer) after just 1 year on the job. Officers work on the Pitman schedule to offer community support and protection 24/7. The men and women of the department work hard in their respective areas of expertise to insure that visitors and residents alike are safe and enjoy their time here on the island.

Minimum Requirements

U.S. Citizen
Be a minimum of 21 years of age
Hold a valid Massachusetts driver’s license
Possess a license to carry (LTC) or ability to obtain one
A degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred but not mandatory



Candidates must be able to pass an intensive background check, Physical agility test, Psychiatric interview, Physician examination including drug screening.
