Job Description - National Reporter

This position requires a presence in New York

About the Job:

The Real Deal is looking for a reporter to provide national perspective to our rapidly growing media company focused on real estate journalism. The Real Deal has headquarters New York City, and a network of five bureaus staffed by journalists covering South Florida, the Texas Triangle, Greater Chicago, Southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area.

We also keep an eye other metropolitan areas, and plan to expand feature coverage to markets such as Atlanta, Nashville, Seattle and Phoenix, among others.

The national reporter would be responsible for in-depth feature pieces and personality profiles for our monthly glossy magazine while producing a regular stream of news and analysis pieces to run on our website.

Clips demonstrating a deft touch on feature writing and prior experience on a news beat are necessary, with specific business coverage a plus.

The ideal candidate will relish the chance to cover the real estate industry's intersections of money, power and personalities, crossing nimbly into politics, finance, law, entertainment and other areas of the business world.

Job Responsibilities:

Contribute three to six original articles of 300 to 800 words per week to The Real Deal’s regular coverage of the real estate industry. Stories could range from markets where we have a presence of staff to other markets.
Identify stories of national interest, either in their own right or because they exemplify or encompass some matter of common interest across markets. Federal policy on Opportunity Zones obviously cuts a national swath and merits coverage—but so does the “abundance” movement as it takes various shapes in a passel of markets across the country.
In most months, contribute a longer story (1,000 to 2,000 words) to The Real Deal’s monthly, national print magazine
Occasionally contribute or collaborate on special reporting projects, typically investigative work or deeply researched features

Job Requirements:

Demonstrated writing, interviewing and reporting skills; ability to produce clean, well-organized and accurate copy on deadline, ranging from breaking news to long-form features and investigations
Ability to write with voice and authority
Capacity to develop expertise and a robust array of sources in one or more of TRD’s coverage areas, such as residential brokerage and home sales, commercial real estate (office, retail, industrial, development), politics and policy, and technology
Ability to obtain and analyze information from databases, property records, financial reports, social media and other sources to identify and enhance stories about the real estate industry
Understanding of and adherence to journalistic standards, ethics and protocol
Ability to juggle and prioritize multiple assignments
Team player; willingness to collaborate with colleagues; familiarity with newsroom culture
Ability to do on-camera interviews, host TRD videos and moderate live events is a plus
$65,000 - $85,000 a year
Compensation & Benefits:
The salary will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
