Nc Lumber Grader / Forklift Operator

Job Summary: 

The Lumber Grader Visually inspects and marks various types of woods to ensure proper specification and color grades. The Lumber Grader will also serve as a Back-Up Forklift Operator, responsible for safely transport loads, ensuring operational efficiency, quality and inventory control.  

Essential Functions:

• Examines lumber on table, moving belt, chain conveyor, or in racks for defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and defective milling, mixes glue


• Grades lumber to ensure specified dimensions


• Marks lumber to indicate grade and processing instructions


• Tallies pieces of lumber according to grade and board footage


• Determines cuts to be made to obtain highest marketable value from material


• Removes unsatisfactory pieces from conveyor or table and places pieces on stacks, in bins, or on carts


• Scales board footage and records results


• Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor and or Manager.


• Continual quality checks


• Work area is to be kept clean and organized


• Operates forklift to receive and store lumber and load equipment.


• Assists with monthly and annual inventory cycle counts and tracking.

Knowledge, Skill and Experience:

• High School Graduate/GED and/or 1-year related experience


• Minimum 2 years of lumber experience


• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.


• Ability to work well within a diverse team environment


• Forklift operation experience


• Physical requirements: lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, repetitive arm/hand motion, pulling, reaching, bending. 


• Basic math skills


• Ability to use a tape measure in both inches and millimeters

License/Certification:

• Valid NC/SC driver’s license (Required)
