ABOUT THE ROLE

The Nemeth Code Braille Transcriber produces accessible math, science, and literary textbooks and instructional materials for students who are blind or visually impaired. Working within the Alabama Instructional Resource Center for the Blind (AIRCB) at the Alabama School for the Blind (ASB), this position executes transcription, data entry, tactile graphics production, proofreading, and physical binding of specialized media. The Transcriber utilizes advanced braille translation software, downloads national source files (NIMAS/NIMAC), maintains media production equipment, and fulfills braille requests for in-state and out-of-state educational needs.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Basic Qualifications

• Education: Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior Braille / Production Experience: Experience working with braille translation, tactile graphics equipment, or special media production environments.
• Literary Braille Certification: Library of Congress Literary Braille Certified
• Nemeth Code Certification: Library of Congress Nemeth Code Braille Certified

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Braille & Technical Production

• Literary Data Entry & Translation: Perform data entry and translation for textbook literary braille production using specialized braille translation software.
• STEM Code Translation: Perform data entry and translation for math and science textbook production using the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation with Unified English Braille (UEB).
• NIMAS File Acquisition: Download NIMAS files from the NIMAC database for braille textbook production utilizing NEMPRO software.
• Tactile Graphics & Media: Produce tactile graphics using special media equipment and tactile graphics software; maintain an organized inventory of tactile graphic masters.
• Code Implementation: Keep abreast of new Unified English Braille (UEB) standards and integrate them into ongoing braille textbook production.
• Software & Equipment Operation: Operate braille embossers and translation software (Duxbury, Tiger Software Suite, Braille Blaster); monitor and maintain special media production equipment to ensure reliable performance.

Quality Control, Binding & Inventory

• Proofreading & Inspection: Preview and proof braille production for accuracy, quality control, and strict compliance with braille standards.
• Book Production & Finishing: Punch, bind, and label braille textbooks for circulation and distribution.
• Digital & Physical Inventory: Maintain an organized inventory of computer data files of produced braille materials on the database server.
• Vendor Order Fulfillment: Reproduce braille textbook purchase order requests from out-of-state vendors.
• Student Instruction: Supervise and instruct work experience students assigned to the AIRCB.

Administration & Operations

• Deadlines & Schedules: Meet all established braille production deadlines, adhere to assigned duty schedules, and follow procedures for leave usage.
• Communication & Courtesy: Answer telephone calls with courtesy, friendliness, and enthusiasm, assisting or directing callers as appropriate.
• Public & Staff Relations: Maintain pleasant, effective working relationships with colleagues and the public while safeguarding confidential information.
• Meetings & Committees: Attend departmental, inter-agency, and campus-wide faculty and committee meetings as requested; serve on assigned committees.
• Technical & Computer Skills: Ability to operate a computer efficiently, including the Windows operating system, and learn specialized braille software (Duxbury, Tiger Software Suite, Braille Blaster, NEMPRO).
• Work Ethic & Detail: Strong work attendance record, punctuality, and work experience that demonstrates diligence regarding detail, accuracy, initiative, and sound judgment with minimal supervision.

Professional Development and Certifications

• Professional Standards: Demonstrate professionalism in behavior and dress, serving as a role model for students and peers.
• Skill Advancement: Participate in appropriate training sessions, workshops, and organizational conferences (which may include travel) to foster professional growth.
• Literary Braille Certification: Must obtain Library of Congress Literary Braille Certification within thirty-six (36) months of employment.
• Nemeth Code Certification: Must obtain Library of Congress Nemeth Code Braille Certification within thirty-six (36) months of employment.

SALARY:   $47,621.00 - $63,529.00             Scale: PI-48

            260 Days - Direct Deposit Required
