• Perform preoperative consultation with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and supervisors.
• Exhibit familiarity of relevant anatomy, medical conditions, and surgical procedures and their bearing on IONM signals.
• Setup, calibrate, maintain and operate IONM software and hardware (e.g. Cadwell, Medtronic, & other companies) to record IONM electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials (EP), and/or electromyography (EMG).
• Establish baselines, to optimize IONM signals and monitor using methods such as auditory brainstem response (ABR), EEG, free-run and triggered EMG, transcranial and direct cortical motor evoked potentials (MEP), somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and other methods (once trained by supervising neurophysiologist).
• Display, label, analyze and review IONM waveforms with colleagues and fellows (e.g. “handoffs” & collaboration) and for expert consultation with supervising neurophysiologists.
• Recognize real-time IONM changes and to provide an immediate and clear report of them to the supervising neurophysiologists, surgeons &/or anesthesiologists.
• Identify and rectify technical problems, which may contaminate the real data and/or give false indications, such as signal artifacts, software and hardware anomalies, stimulation and setup errors.
• Knowledge of the effect of anesthesia on IONM signals in order to collaborate with anesthesia personnel to achieve anesthetic conditions that promote optimal IONM recordings.
• Escalate as appropriate, for consultation or help in addressing IONM or OR issues affecting patient care.
• Promptly report to supervisors, in-person or remote, for troubleshooting assistance, professional assessment and/or other issues.
• Document, clearly and expediently, the results of IONM activities, protected patient information, anesthesia and surgical events and communications for medical records and billing purposes in a manner consistent with departmental policies.
• Ability to communicate in English, clearly and effectively, sometimes in stressful circumstances. 
• Adapt to changes in the work environment, such as, but not limited to, changes in procedures, modalities, providers, patients and work location.
• Take call and monitor cases during daytime, evening, weekends and holidays, in accordance with departmental policies at all UCSF locations.

• Maintain knowledge of current techniques, technologies, advances, and regulatory standards in IONM from reading books, journals, online materials and participating in education programs.
• Maintain IONM certification (i.e. CNIM). 
• Participate in departmental meetings, hospital in-service programs, professional meetings/seminars, through on-line and in-person formats.
• Ability and willingness to learn and employ new methods, procedures and policies from supervisors. 
• Conform to hospital medical stipulations and policies.
• Assist in non-IONM duties such as research, administrative, hardware/software and workstation maintenance. 
• Meet with manager or delegate for periodic review of performance.
