We are looking for a skilled and experienced News Editor to be part of our editorial team. In this role, you will   

direct the daily editorial content of syndicated and Associated Press columns, stories. Assists with assigning reporters to cover news products with emphasis on local news and features. Checks for accuracy and fairness in the newspaper articles and headlines.

Requirements

1. Coordinates day-to-day activities of the news desk. Directs and controls functions of the daily syndicated news submissions.

2. Oversees daily production of pagination/design desk. Supervises paginator. 

3. Enforces policies, rules and procedures of VVN and news content procedures.

4. Meets regularly with the editor and city editor keeps them informed about potentially libelous and defamation situations.

5. Provides input and assists in the hiring, firing, disciplining, commending, coordination of editorial training, and evaluates paginator/layout designer, with input of editor and HR department.

6. Designs and lays out news pages for all VVN news publications and special sections to prescribed quality standards. Writes headlines for stories.

7. Contracts for stringers. Negotiates contracts and submits billing. 

8. Produces material as needed for company’s websites and social media sites. Be familiar with the internet. Generates ideas to improve web content. Stays abreast of new online trends.

9. Covers news events as necessary.

10. Attends editorial budget meetings, editorial staff meetings and VVN staff meetings. Participates in community events, representing the company.

11. Writes editorials and columns for all VVN news publications and special sections.

12. Exceeds customer’s expectations in a courteous and professional manner. A customer is anyone who contributes directly or indirectly to the revenues of the organization.

13. Basic knowledge of office equipment including computers, email, scanners and copiers. Types, proofreads and edits copy using a computer. Types 45 words per minute accurately. 

14. Provides training and ongoing coaching for newsroom staff.

Note: This is a full time, 40 hours per week minimum on site position.
