The Next Generation Pastor provides spiritual leadership, vision, and strategic oversight for all Next Generation ministries at Journey Christian Church. This role directly oversees Kids Ministry staff and Student Ministry staff, leads the Young Adult ministry, and directs the Residency Program. The Next Generation Pastor focuses on developing staff leaders, building healthy ministry systems, and ensuring a clear discipleship pathway from childhood through young adulthood. This role partners closely with the Executive Pastor and contributes to the broader leadership and teaching life of the church.
Primary Responsibilities:
Leadership and Vision
Cast and steward a compelling vision for Next Generation ministry aligned with Journey’s mission and values
Develop and maintain a clear discipleship pathway from Kids through Young Adults
Ensure ministry health, clarity, and alignment across all Next Generation areas
Model Christ centered leadership, humility, and relational presence
Kids Ministry Staff Oversight
Directly lead and support Kids Ministry staff
Provide coaching, development, and performance feedback to staff leaders
Ensure ministry strategy, structure, and staffing support effective ministry environments
Partner with Kids Ministry staff to equip and support volunteers
Student Ministry Staff Oversight
Directly lead and support Student Ministry staff
Provide clarity, coaching, and leadership development for staff team members
Ensure alignment between Student Ministry and Journey’s discipleship pathway
Support Student Ministry staff in creating healthy volunteer teams and student environments
Young Adult Ministry Leadership
Lead the vision, strategy, and execution of Young Adult ministry
Develop staff and key leaders within the Young Adult ministry
Create clear connection points for young adults into groups, serving, and discipleship
Align Young Adult ministry with Journey’s overall mission and culture
Residency Program Leadership
Oversee and direct the Journey Residency Program
Design development plans focused on spiritual formation, ministry competency, and leadership growth
Provide coaching, mentoring, and regular feedback to residents
Ensure residents gain meaningful ministry experience under guided supervision
Teaching and Communication
Teach in main weekend services multiple times throughout the year as opportunities allow
Support teaching in Next Generation and leadership environments as needed
Communicate vision and values clearly to staff, leaders, parents, and the congregation
Team Culture and Collaboration
Build a healthy, collaborative staff culture rooted in trust, clarity, and care
Champion Journey staff values and expectations
Collaborate closely with the Executive Pastor and other ministry leaders
Contribute to church wide initiatives and strategic priorities
Operational Leadership
Partner with the Executive Pastor on budgeting and financial stewardship
Ensure effective systems, rhythms, and communication across Next Generation ministries
Evaluate ministry effectiveness and staff health regularly
Support policies and best practices related to safety, staffing, and ministry operations
Qualifications
A growing and vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ
Proven leadership and staff development experience
Strong relational and communication skills
Ability to lead leaders and manage complexity
Alignment with Journey’s mission, values, and theology
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required
Seminary training or graduate theological education preferred
Ministry leadership experience in a church or comparable ministry context
