Job Description - Niebur Center Child Watch Staff

Position Summary:


Under the direction of the Niebur Member Services Director and per the Christian principles of the YMCA, the Child Watch Staff will supervise children ages six weeks through 12 years old at the Niebur Center child watch room. Staff members will establish and maintain supportive relationships with the children and parents and provide a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintain a professional, respectful, positive attitude towards employees, members, and participants in YMCA programs.
  2. Exemplify the core mission values of the YMCA while performing all duties.
  3. Complete required YMCA training according to the Edwardsville YMCA employee policy.
  4. Use positive discipline and guidance techniques.
  5. Provide an environment where children can feel comfortable, relaxed, happy, and involved in play, recreation, and other activities.
  6. Arrive on time for each assigned shift.
  7. Give complete focus to the children, free of distractions such as cell phones and personal issues.
  8. Update the Member Services Director on any significant developments regarding the child or parent of a child in their room.
  9. Supervises the children, classroom, and all activities.
  10. From May through August, additional essential duties will include tasks associated with the Kids’ Corner program.
  11. All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Previous experience working with children including children as young as six weeks up to 12 years old.
  2. Display superior relationship-building skills and communicate effectively with a diverse group of employees, volunteers, children, and parents.
  3. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  4. Basic working computer knowledge
  5. First Aid and CPR certifications
  6. Favorable criminal background check
  7. Complete required YMCA training according to Edwardsville YMCA employee policy.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device. 
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, sit, and reach and must be able to move around the work environment. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.  
  • Specific vision abilities this job requires include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to respond swiftly in an emergency.
  • Must be able to coordinate a variety of large and small tasks simultaneously and handle tension and stress in a positive manner
