DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Plastic Surgery Division Chair, the Nurse Practitioner will function as a provider of patient care on specific surgical in- and out-patient services.

Incumbent will function as a surgical assistant in the operating room, in the clinics, and on the wards, all in coordination with established surgical services. The duties would including inpatient rounding, preoperative workup, preoperative care, complex wound management and some consults. Direct supervision will occur by assigned attending surgeons.

The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from pre- to post-op settings. This position also requires special skills and knowledge in the fields of cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery and wound care.
Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the NPI or NPII level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.

BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

Recent RN or NP work experience in surgery (any surgical field) or other procedural specialty.

Willingness to learn new clinical skills and function as an independent provider.

Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine including basics in

pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery - in particular wound care, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

Demonstrated skills necessary to function as first assistant in operative procedures, and knowledge of operating room standards and techniques.

Demonstrated knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patients care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient, outpatient plans of treatment.

Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

Demonstrated ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

Demonstrated ability to perform various medical procedures, for diagnostic studies and therapeutic modalities.

Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful manner.

Demonstrated ability perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment e.g., tissue perfusion measuring devices.

Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of work experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner in surgery or other procedural specialty.

Cultural competence and interest in reconstructive surgery and gender affirming care.

Experience in an acute care setting or procedural specialty.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice.

May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday.

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $158,187 - $221,370 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $75.76 - $106.02
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
