Job Summary
The Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Specialist/Nurse Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the inpatient and outpatient VAD patient care, including review of lab results and medications in collaboration with the attending physician and/or surgeon. Under the direction of the Medical and/or Surgical Director for Pediatric Heart Failure & Heart Transplant, the MCS Specialist will coordinate inpatient and outpatient referrals and appointments, pre-VAD patient workup, including diagnostic appointments, testing and procedures, and will meet with the potential VAD patient and family in the hospital or in the clinic to discuss and educate the patient and family on VAD device physiology and VAD lifestyle changes.

The MCS Specialist will round daily with the inpatient team on patients on support to assist with device specific questions and management. The Nurse Coordinator will be essential in the provision of ongoing MCS education, both for in-house staff as well as community staff. Specifically for the in-house education, the MCS Specialist will work in collaboration with Heart Center nursing leadership to develop a comprehensive educational plan to offer to RN staff who is involved in the care and management of the MCS patients. Ultimately, this position will be vital in developing the content and structure to allow for a robust online educational initiative that will assist with up-to-date information and changes with MCS therapy, as well as annual competency requirements. The MCS Specialist will also understand the foundations of Advanced Heart Failure and Heart Transplant and will provide cross-coverage for the Heart Transplant RN Coordinator service.
