Job Description - OB Clinical Nurse Coordinator

Description

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC) at WMMC provides staff development expertise as an educator, consultant, facilitator, change agent, leader and researcher. Each supports the development of the bedside nurse, and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence and standardization through the delivery of evidence- based nursing practice. This occurs through the facilitation of the educational process through assessment, development, planning, implementation and evaluation of competency assessment, continuing education and leadership development. As a role model of professional behavior, the CNC is instrumental in creating a professional nursing climate within WMMC to meet the needs of the diverse departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assure quality of care by developing and interpreting hospital and nursing division’s philosophies and standards of care.
  • Help with maintaining nursing staff by recruiting, orienting, and training nursing staff.
  • Provide information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests.
  • Resolve patient or staff needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  • Ensure operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability; completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.
  • Foster collaborative working relationships across all hospital departments by communicating effectively, responding to interdepartmental needs, building rapport, participating in team-based problem solving and education.
  • Maintain current competency in obstetrical/perinatal nursing.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Seek opportunities to develop staff in various roles.
  • Lead committees, work groups and/or projects related to the implementation of educational activities.
  • Serve as a role model for education and professional nursing practice.
  • Serve as an educational consultant to facilities, task forces, committees, and projects relating to policy, procedure, and program development.
  • Provide general competency courses, as well as ones specialized for specific areas or hospital wide.
  • Conduct needs assessment annually.
  • Develop/coordinate education plans related to the initial and ongoing competency validation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of regulating bodies, hospital policy and procedures.
  • Support staff development with education activities (which include remediation, certification, mentoring, life support, Joint Commission requirements, MHA projects, product rollouts, etc.).
  • Routinely participates in QI projects and encourages department to continuously improve.
  • Assist coworkers as needed/requested.
  • Demonstrate positive customer service relations.
  • Support the Medical Center’s Mission/Vision/Philosophy positively.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently licensed to practice as a professional registered nurse in the state of Missouri.
  • BSN is required or obtain within 3 years.
  • Evidence of two (2) years of immediate experience in Obstetrics.
  • Current BLS required.
  • Current NRP required and obtain instructor status within 6 months.
  • Current ACLS required.
  • Current AWHONN fetal monitoring instructor required or obtain within 6 months.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to sit and stand intermittently 8 to 12 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Continuously works under pressure of nearly 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
  • Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 35 lbs.
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
