Job Description - Off- Platform Producer

Full-time

Description

The Texas Tribune is hiring an Off-Platform Producer to help us reach Texans wherever they are, especially on platforms like Instagram and Reddit. This role is for a journalist who is deeply curious about how audiences discover and engage with news today.

You’ll help grow our presence beyond our homepage, experiment with emerging platforms, and support newsletter production, all with a focus on building trust with communities across Texas. If you spend time thinking about how news travels online and how it should, this role may be for you.

We’re looking for someone who is excited to find new ways to engage Texans across the state on the political and policy issues that affect their lives. The Off-Platform Producer will help connect communities with relevant, useful information on the platforms where they already get their news.

This position reports to the director of audience engagement and growth, Matt Adams.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Produce and publish Tribune content on Instagram, working closely with the visuals team on platform-specific storytelling.
  • Share Tribune reporting on Reddit, lead Reddit AMAs and engage with relevant subreddits to reach new readers.
  • Help manage social media posting across our X, Bluesky, WhatsApp and Facebook accounts.
  • Help with breaking news by making sure Tribune stories are showing up on third-party platforms.
  • Produce the Monday edition of The Brief newsletter, while also providing support for broader newsletter production as needed.
  • Work closely with the social media editor on enterprise stories to plan how Tribune reporting gets distributed across social platforms.
  • Track performances using analytics tools (Parsley, Google Analytics) to learn what resonates with readers
  • Execute platform-specific strategies to grow audience and engagement on emerging and off-platform channels and contribute meaningfully to strategic conversations
  • Experiment with emerging platforms and audience trends, where should the Tribune be that we are not at the moment?
  • Help test new formats and storytelling approaches.
  • Bring fresh ideas about how the Tribune can show up in digital spaces thoughtfully and authentically.
  • Notify the newsroom on emerging trends and searches from platforms that could be used for distribution and story ideas.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom work with reporters, visuals teams and editors to extend the reach of Tribune journalism.
  • Engage with audiences directly, responding to questions, surfacing feedback, and identifying information needs
  • Identify opportunities to reach underserved audiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, digital media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience creating, producing or distributing content for social media platforms, digital publishers and news organizations.
  • Strong news judgment, with the ability to identify stories that will resonate with broad and diverse audiences across Texas.
  • Experience in social media management, with a strong track record of building and engaging online communities.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and growing audiences on platforms such as Instagram, Reddit and other emerging channels.
  • Excellent writing with a proven ability to craft compelling, accurate, and platform-appropriate headlines and social copy
  • Comfort learning analytics tools and working with performance data.
  • Willingness to experiment, test ideas and learn quickly. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • A deeper understanding of how journalism connects with communities across Texas.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics and performance metrics.
  • Passion for understanding audience behavior and helping journalism reach new communities.
  • Experience translating complex or policy-heavy topics into clear, engaging, and accessible content.
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working cross-functionally with reporters, editors, and product or audience teams
  • Comfortable experimenting with new formats, testing ideas and learning from performance data.

We know some great candidates won’t check all of the boxes, and we also know you might bring important skills that we haven’t considered. If that's you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
