Job Description - On-Call Support Staff

The On-Call Support Staff position at St. Francis Center is a unique opportunity to bring compassion and stability to people in our community. With flexible hours and a variety of shifts, this role is ideal for people with time, who are seeking supplemental income, and who have a learning mindset and a heart to give back. 


  


As an On-Call Support Staff member, you’ll have the chance to serve in different settings—supporting outreach efforts, welcoming guests at our Day Center, assisting residents in Permanent Supportive Housing, or helping at a Non-Congregate Shelter used for temporary housing. Each shift offers meaningful connections, whether you’re greeting someone picking up their mail, offering safety and calm to a guest in crisis, or supporting individuals as they transition into stable housing.

St. Francis Center (SFC), a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, was established in June 1983. SFC is a refuge for adults who are homeless in the metro Denver area. Our programs and services focus on daytime shelter, social services, health and wellness, housing, employment, and outreach. At the SFC Day Center, “guests” have the opportunity to work with a variety of specialists, depending on their individual needs, which is often the first step toward transformation and ultimately self-sufficiency.  At our permanent supportive housing sites, we focus on helping residents remain stable in their housing by providing trauma-informed case management and connecting them to resources in the wider community. 


 


POSITION OVERVIEW 


 


This On-Call position is intended to provide support for multiple departments at SFC, as outlined below, with opportunities to fill daytime, evening, swing
and weekend shifts. This position has the potential to fill on-call roles in these departments: Housing, Non-Congregate Shelter, Street Outreach and Day Center Core Services. 
 


 


HOUSING: On-call shifts for the housing department are typically designed to provide front desk coverageThe work site can vary among any of our permanent supportive housing sitesDuties include, providing a courteous, physical presence at the front desk, following the specific rules of each the site, manage visitors, answer the phone, document events and interactions, support residents and staff during emergencies, and generally promote a safe and welcoming environment.   



 


NON-CONGREGATE SHELTER:
As a Shelter Associate On-Call staff member, you will support a 24/7 facility that operates three shifts:
7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM, and 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM. On-call staff are responsible for essential front desk and facility support, including
answering phones and assisting callers, greeting and directing vendors to appropriate spaces, maintaining accurate sign-in/out logs for vendors and community members, receiving breakfast, lunch, or dinner deliveries and ensuring food items are placed in the appropriate guest dining areas, and providing resources and basic support to non-housed community members who arrive at the shelter.
 


 


STREET OUTREACH:
As an Outreach on-call staff member, this position is winter-weather dependent (seasonal), evening only (5-9/10pm) and supports the full Outreach Team in covering Cold Weather Outreach shifts during activated weather events. This position will require a comfort-level being outside
in winter weather conditions and will involve traveling across Denver to provide warm-weather survival gear and/or rides to emergency cold weather shelters to interested individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness. 
 


 


DAY CENTER CORE SERVICES: As a Core Services on-call staff member, this position
supports the Day Center, which provides emergency day shelter and services to persons experiencing homelessness. Core Services staff work as a team with other staff and volunteers in order to implement the day center’s mission of providing a safe, peaceful, clean, and respectful environment where guests can meet their basic needs and access supportive services to work towards housing.

  • Maintain high standards of safety, guest care, and a respectful environment, upholding policies/standards in each working environment 



  • Maintain professional conduct and boundaries 



  • Maintain a high standard of communication inside the workplace and regarding your assigned shifts 



  • Adhere to documentation standards 



  • Provide relevant information/referrals, direct services, and respectful customer service 



  • Respond to crisis situations, utilizing de-escalation and trauma-informed care best practices 



  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by specific departments 


 


Requirements/Qualifications: 


 



  • At minimum, an Associate's degree or actively in post-secondary education, and/or 1-2 years of experience working with vulnerable populations  



  • Ability to work with people and offer respectful customer service. 



  • Ability to work with people who may be experiencing difficult life trauma and might be showing signs of that trauma in their actions and communication. 



  • Ability to de-escalate people in crisis. 



  • Ability to listen to community members’ needs. 



  • Ability to be flexible 



  • Strong professional boundaries. 



  • Willingness to participate in SFC trainings to complement services in a trauma-informed manner. 



  • Basic computer skills necessary, and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs a plus. 



 


Compensation and Benefits: 



$21-$23/hour 


This is a non-exempt position and is not eligible for benefits.
