Job Description - Open Pool NWRC/USDA Research Associate II

Job Description

Position Summary:

These are full-time RA II positions that will lead independent research on the economic dimensions of invasive species impacts, wildlife disease impacts, and other human–wildlife conflicts.


Selected candidates will each:

  • Conduct independent economic analyses and damage assessment research.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and contribute leadership within NWRC research groups.
  • Serve as economic and technical liaisons between NWRC and Veterinary Services on wildlife disease modeling and economic impact estimation.
  • Guide the development of damage‑management economic frameworks for NWRC and Wildlife Services (WS).
  • Contribute to reporting and communication of economic findings to state WS programs.
  • Major research outputs will include data analyses, factsheets, presentations, and peer‑reviewed publications.

They will work in the department of Economics and the NWRC and Wildlife Services.


Salary Range:

$88,000 - $90,000


Essential Job Duties:

  • Each researcher will independently manage the full research cycle—from hypothesis development through project completion. Responsibilities include:
  • Defining research goals and determining appropriate data collection and analytical strategies.
  • Designing methodologies for collecting wildlife‑damage data across agricultural, property, aviation, and other resource categories.
  • Serving as lead economists in the development of a new, agency‑wide Wildlife Services damage‑data collection system.
  • Developing analytical methods and dashboards using R, C++, Python, and related tools, including integration with external economic modeling platforms such as IMPLAN or REMI.

Supervision:

These positions will not supervise any employees.


Minimal Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree or higher in Biology, Wildlife Biology, or related field.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, be punctual, and communicate changes in work schedule.
  • Ability to work inclusively in a diverse setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in wildlife damage management research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cost‑assessment methodologies in wildlife or natural resource applications.
  • Additional valuable skills include:
  • Statistics and bioeconomic modeling.
  • Programming in R, C++, Python, or Matlab.
  • Ecology or wildlife management background.
  • Survey design and analysis.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with peer‑reviewed publications.
