Wake Forest Operational Medicine provides advanced medical training to elite medics and operators from the U.S. armed services and other government agencies, as well as allied military forces from around the globe.

The Operational Medicine Scenario Technician serves as role players to create realistic, standardized training environments for OMD exercises. They portray patients/casualties, local nationals, and opposition forces, and remain in character throughout each scenario. They respond to trainee actions in accordance with the scenario script and training objectives, using improvisation within defined constraints to sustain realism while staying aligned to desired learning objectives. They coordinate closely with instructors and other support staff, utilize moulage and other realism effects as needed, and prioritize safety and professionalism throughout each evolution. When not actively role playing, they assist with the setup and reset of scenario areas and training aids to keep exercises running smoothly.
 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Portray realistic roles (patient, civilian, adversary) during training scenarios. 
  • Adapt responses in real time to trainee actions while maintaining scenario objectives. 
  • Maintain consistent, standardized role performance across exercises. 
  • Simulate physical, emotional, and behavioral responses to injuries or situations. 
  • Immediately identify and report safety concerns or hazards. 
  • Support realistic environments through movement, communication, and scenario interaction. 
  • Prepare and stage training equipment, props, and casualty layouts. 
  • Assist in setup, reset, and reconfiguration of training areas between evolutions. 
  • Clean, inspect, repair, and store equipment and training areas post-exercise. 
  • Track, organize, and restock supplies while maintaining training space readiness. 
  • Support specialized functions such as moulage/prosthetics, set design, or high-angle safety systems. 
  • Manage and maintain training equipment (e.g., weapons, props) including inspection, accountability, and compliance.  
     

Job Requirements: 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prior experience in role playing, standardized patient simulation, or acting in training environments. 
  • Experience supporting military, law enforcement, emergency response, or medical training operations. 
  • Familiarity with hands-on tasks such as equipment setup, logistics support, or field operations. 
  • Exposure to high-stress or dynamic environments requiring adaptability and real-time responsiveness. 
  • Basic experience with tools, prop construction, or technical support functions (maintenance, setup, etc.)
     

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and operate within structured training scenarios while adapting in real time. 
  • Strong situational awareness and ability to identify and report safety risks promptly. 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with trainees and staff in dynamic settings. 
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, role consistency, and attention to detail under stress. 
  • Team-oriented mindset with ability to coordinate effectively with instructors and support personnel.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: 

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crawl, or lie on the ground for extended periods during role‑playing activities   
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry training equipment, props, patient models, or supplies (typically up to 75-100 lbs) using proper body mechanics and team-lift techniques as required.   
  • Ability to perform repeated physical motions such as running short distances, simulated injury posturing, or staged tactical movements.  
  • Exposure to simulated combat conditions (noise, smoke, pyrotechnics, blank‑fire weapons, and loud verbal commands).   
  • Exposure to variable environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and wind.   
  • Frequent handling of cadaveric tissue, biological specimens, medical simulators, and porcine training materials in accordance with biosafety protocols.
     

Preferred Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Direct experience in high-fidelity simulation or immersive training environments supporting complex scenarios. 
  • Background in military, SOF, EMS, or law enforcement training programs, particularly in operational or austere settings. 
  • Hands-on experience with moulage, prosthetics, or advanced realism techniques to enhance training quality. 
  • Familiarity with safety protocols in complex training environments involving simulated weapons, hazards, or technical systems. 
  • Relevant operational or technical experience preferred. . 
  • Advanced ability to enhance realism through nuanced role portrayal, improvisation, and environmental interaction. 
  • Ability to operate independently in high-tempo, high-stress training events with minimal guidance. 
  • Capability to support immersive training environments through technical or creative contributions (e.g., set design, scenario enhancement).
